Guys

Yesterday, I was reading the old hilarious discussion we had on D**cord, and let me say this:

Why Have We Freaked Out About Messaging Apps After One Unfortunate Incident?!

With proper administration, of myself and others I promise that this time, it will work out. Don't you wan't to return to those "old-times"? Also, Telegram is amazing! Iv'e been using it for a year now, and it has been absolutely amazing at doing it's job. There's even a music bot where you can download and listen to music!

The people who caused trouble last time are no longer here, so what's the problem? Are we all that antisocial? Come on. Proper admins are all we need to restore the wonders of the instant chat of OGF.

Please think about this before you comment "But i though this was settled blablabla...."

Please, no. OGF isn't fit for instant messaging (and I know I'm repeating myself, but the point still stands). The main problem with chats is: messages disappear too quickly. Another thing - constant notifications are annoying. And the chat can't be well divided, there can be different rooms but tbh it's not enough. In my opinion we need a PROPER forum. You don't have to have it open 24/7 to take part in a discussion, messages don't disappear after a minute and not only there can be subforums but also subsubforums et cetera. Maybe I'm stuck in the '00s but to hell with that, we need a practical solution and a chatroom isn't one. The only thing chatroom is good at is casual discussion.

I am kind of dinosaur here, because I in chatting I am stuck with IRC but I do not think we need something like that. Problem with all chat rooms is that in common room everyone talks about everything and gaining consensus even in simple things is difficult. Usually right belongs to ones who can write fast. In multinational group it exclude all users who aren't speaking English at native or near native level. So, in short, forum is much better.

Why don't we have a forum yet then?

There is a forum on the Wiki, but it is barely accessible and to be honest this isn't a "proper" forum, just an addon to the Wiki (of course congrats to the OGF team for actually getting it to run, but personally I don't think it's going anywhere). And I don't think that admins have enough time nor energy to organise any other additional official way for us to communicate. Remember that both chats and forums have to be moderated. This is why I don't believe anything is going to happen, at least in near future. And if whatever happens then one of the main problems is accessibility - neither chat nor forum won't be successful wihout a quick and easy way to open it (with community-ran stuff, the diary post disappears and everyone just forgets about it).

What if we don't have a large chat room, but instead just Direct Message the person if you really want to do it? I still think that the OGF message system and user diaries are better. But if you really want, just Direct Message the person privately.

Thanks, Zekiel

And getting everyone to go to the chat room if we get one, which is unlikely, will be a massive logistical challenge, as we would need to make sure that everyone gets it, and that all new users get it too.

I honestly feel the User Diaries are not enough. There isn't any organization. We need a forum. It would be easier to find the information we need.

Speaking for myself only, there are a number of reasons why messaging apps may not be a good fit for OGF:

  • They necessitate software that might not be accessible to everyone.
  • They require users to create and manage yet another account.
  • They don't help to organize or improve accessibility to information.
  • They may be significantly more prone to arguments and other drama.
  • They may easily be dominated by the least mature, most "bored" users.
  • They may demand more intensive moderation than forums.
  • They may be more distracting and time-consuming than forums.
  • They may be harder to participate in for those with limited English skills.

As was mentioned in an earlier comment, there's a forum currently being tested in the wiki. The reason it's "barely accessible" is because it's in testing phase and hasn't been announced yet. It'll be announced when it's ready.

For anyone wanting to socialize and make friends, there's nothing stopping you from informally inviting people from OGF to hang out with you on messaging apps, social media, etc. Just reach out to whoever you want to get to know and ask them to join you.

OGF just doesn't -need- a messaging app which encompasses all members. Because it isn't needed it just devolves into nonsense and abuse (as we well saw).

I created an external forum for OGF to try and move away from Discord but no-one wanted to take it up.

There's now forum functionality on the wiki and it looks good and it's on the official OGF server so if we were to try anything next it ought to be that.
