Luciano's Mapper's Challenge #13 - April, 2017 - Better Boundaries, Better Neighbors

Posted by Luciano on 1 April 2017 in Korean (한국어)

Moving forward, I will be posting my Monthly Mapper's Challenges in my Bliki, rather than in the diaries. I'd like to see the diaries move in the direction of just being a place for community-wide announcements and technical issues, rather than a place for "brags" and "requests for feedback" etc.

I think that Mapper's Challenges belong more in User Diaries than personal Blikis. Mapper's Challenges are effectively 'community-wide announcements' which you yourself said belong in the User Diaries.

I agree with MrOobling; while I see the appeal of Blikis, I wouldn't be incredible happy to see "feedback requests", "brags" or just general thoughts about mapping vanish from the diaries. Subtracting "preventable" entries (and I mean this in a very subjective sense), I counted 14 diary entries in the last 8 days, that's less than two per day. I really don't see why putting them on the wiki would make things in any way more tidy, rather the opposite in my honest opinion. That being said, I do enjoy reading the Blikis that are being put on the wiki, and I will try to get started on the eastern border of Kojo; I've restrained myself from touching it too much since I don't have an (active) neighbour over there, but who knows when someone will move in eventually ;)

What is the objection to "requests for feedback" in user diaries? I don't see a problem with it. Especially for newer mappers who would like some criticism.

Well, I supposed I should modify my explanation. The basic fact is that I am not happy with User Diaries and dislike them - both for "technical reasons" (e.g. it doesn't really provide much flexibility to categorize entries, to search entries, etc.) and for "discourse reasons" (e.g. many of the entries feel like very low level discourse that doesn't take geofiction or the site very seriously, and there's no way to avoid seeing those).

Therefore I guess you could view this as a "take my ball and go play elsewhere": I'll leave the User Diaries to the newbies and the unserious, and let the newly emerging "blikiland" be higher-level discourse on our world and project.

I agree with you, Luciano. Do you think we could maybe try to make the blikis more accessible? I thought of creating a section, maybe on the open page of the main wiki, with the recently updated blikis, so that people could easily access them. Do you think something like that is possible?
