On Contours

Posted by Luciano on 3 April 2016 in Korean (한국어)

Several users have asked about contours, and there have been discussions before.

I have made a "contours discussion" page in my sandbox, which users may consult.

Thanks for sharing, Luciano. That's amazing! There's lots of interesting things to do here. I could even get lost. :) Looking forward to my first contours experiment.

You stated that it is possible to draw contours with JOSM. However, I wonder HOW...?

You know what I'm thinking now...Google Earth overlay for the OGF planet. Of course, there's the slight problem of not having any satellite imagery, but it could be done as a contour map. A huge project though, and the flat map is hardly started.

@EMKLI - I guess the "How" comes from downloading the sample file I put at my sandbox, and using it as an example. It's really not that hard, it's just a matter of drawing a lot of lines. It is helpful to have a hydrology worked out first, at least in broad strokes, so you know where the ridges are. It is very time-consuming and a bit boring to spend time on. So I divide it up with other projects, and view it as a long-term undertaking.

Luciano, I guess, you misunderstood me. ;-) I know that "how" that you seem to have understood. The "how" that I meant is about the technical process. I do draw the lines like any other line - lik I want do draw many parallel roads. This is what I've understood so far. But - what do I have to do with that lines? I think I cannot just upload them to the OGF database? I understood that implementing heights is up to Thilo - but what do I do with the data that Thilo can use it? Saving it and mail it to him?

@EMKLI - Sorry I misunderstood. I mentioned that, yes, after creating the contour file, it should be zipped and emailed to Thilo, who is developing a program that converts the contours into a TOPO background for the Topo Layer renders.

I'm not sure how "scalable" that program is - i.e., Thilo might not be prepared for a flood of emails requesting contour conversion, so if you have a completed contour file it would be important to discuss with him, via private message or email, before sending him something.
