Luciano's Mapper's Challenge #9 - December, 2016 - Oops

Posted by Luciano on 4 December 2016 in Korean (한국어)

I guess last month's challenge was a little bit lame - and of course, because of my travels I did not participate. If anyone did something interesting with coastlines, I'd be interested to see - sorry if I missed it.

As most of you know, I've been agonizing over Mahhal's verisimilitude quite a bit - mainly climate, but also sociological factors, population, etc. I'll post some more detailed thoughts about that later, probably to my newly-redeveloped "bliki" rather than to my diaries here - I'm going to try to keep my diary entries to more "community focused" things, like these monthly challenges.

Luciano's Mapper's Challenge #9 - December, 2016 - Oops

This month's challenge is about mistakes. We all have made many mistakes, in OGF. Maybe because we were still learning. Maybe because we ran with an idea we later regret. Maybe because we just got bored with the way things were working out in an area, and we left it unfinished. A lot of times, we just kind of move on to other projects, because of the amount of time we invested in that "mistake" makes us hesitate to delete it or start over. We feel regret, but we don't do anything about it.

So let's "clean up" some big mistake. Frankly, there are whole countries that might be charitably classified as mistakes. If you are really confident that you have made no mistakes, then I envy you, but I still hope you accept this challenge - you can clean up someone else's mistake (with their permission, of course, or for stuff abandoned by past users). Please don't invest in Commonia, however, since that large territory is slated for major changes, and investing energy there is probably a bad idea.

I am going to to spend this month "fixing" Mahhal. I have already shared my worries about the climate situation, and I've really appreciated the feedback, especially Aiki's map. Now I'm going to try to adapt to that, moving and deleting population centers, rearranging islands, re-thinking mountain ranges, etc. I've already taken the huge, tentative step of moving Tárrases, as well as rearranging the Jessitim and Nellappe prefectures so that the Central Sea opens northward. If I include the need to draw and/or re-draw the topo maps for the region, I'm sure I have more than enough work for the month.

I could just as easily have picked my great city, Villa Constitución, which I also intend to completely re-work. But that will be for some future date.

What mistake will you fix, for this month's challenge? I'm looking forward to seeing lots of great work.

Happy mapping!

This challenge's timing is on spot. I've been wanting to do something with the suburbs and rural areas of Drahns for a long time. They need more density, a bit more sprawl, more farms and smaller fields, small areas of forests and bushes, more water... I mean, they're not that bad, but my goal is to make them the best I can.

I think Balonis City really needs to be re-done. So that's going to be the challenge for me this month. I will have to change many wiki pages and delete almost everything I did for the capital so far...

Oh boy.... where do I start? I feel like completely erasing Pasaliapolis and the area around it. I'm not happy with it.... But its so much work... Well... We'll see what this month brings. I thought this stuff would be a bit easier but as I keep on working I get to think ,,this doesnt quite fit into there...'' We'll see... We'll see....

It looks like I was doing the challenge before it even started! (See my previous Wyndham post). Anyway, I'll put Wyndham on hold; I'm satisfied with it for now.

I guess I'll remake Stewhampton after I finish Decton High Street. If I have motivation, I'll redisign Ellmouth as well. The place is a mess.

I'd like to do something for this challenge, but not sure what. I've posted a separate diary entry to ask for thoughts on Kėzėpölān.

Hell! This is the perfect challenge for me now, as I'm not happy with how does Brzeg look. Whole editing I do in Shilesia lately is removing what was there earlier and adding new stuff which I delete afterwards and the infinite cycle of "removing and redoing" goes on. I'm afraid that I need to redo the area completely (even through it's not done yet...).

I feel like I've already been doing this challenge since I started mapping here. Lol

This map challenge sounds interesting, I'm curious about the fixings for Mahhal.. I've been looking at mistakes with Aŭstrasuno Tero, and I found some of them. I think I'm going to change names in some areas and cities, like Norda Haveno and trying to not use the word "Haveno" constantly. For Aŭstraĉerfubo maybe I'm going to rethink the suburban areas and preparing for the middle towns and farming areas between Norda Haveno and Delta Insulo. But I have made many corrections of mistakes. like the cleanising and ordering of the coastal relation of Aŭstrasuno Tero and natural issues with Granda Glaciaro.

I believe that the entire country of Litvania is one big mistake. I have been very inactive lately, but thats because of school life.

I am looking forward to the Christmas and New Year holidays to work on Loravia for a while, and later move on to trying to teach myself to use JOSM properly.

Excellent idea Luciano! I am going to take this challenge by removing unnecessary lakes and mountains, and divert the Shirahoshi River to Zerephine City in Belphenia.

If I was really honest with myself and this challenge, probably most of the western half of Kojo would need to be rethought; however I have yet to gain some inspiration as for what I should do there. I know I want that part of the country to be only sparsely populated, apart from the coast and the area around Geryong, but I haven't really started mapping any landcoverage for my wide and flat scrubs-heath-steppe kind thing... I might look into getting some real world examples, rethink the streams and rivers in the area, and then reposition the cities. Time will tell ^-^

Even though I didn't see this until now, I've started working a little bit on cleaning up rail, roads and freeways in Freedemia, starting with the Quentinsburgh area. I've been going through and sort of drawing a more realistic parallel line, then deleting the old one. So far it has helped me see new potential for certain areas as well, and I think it will end up being a very helpful part of my Freedemian urban coast master plan, as it will help me rework neighborhoods as well.
