Weekly World #13

The next word is DISASTER.

I have mentioned this before but I live in Houston and Hurricane Harvey has absolutely destroyed our area, I currently have a family of eight living with my family because their house is still under water. I want the word to be disaster as I want to see how people can either-

  • Build a landscape that will avoid a disaster whether it's flooding, landslides or earthquakes or even man-made like an abundance of gated neighborhoods because crime was high, or a refugee camp, (this is pretty hard)

  • Map an area that has been affected by a disaster that again could either be man-made. Leowozy already has a great example in Kalae.

Good to know news about you, my friend!

There is a supervisor here in the oli rig who lives in Houston, like you, and he told me the city is under water, but his house was not damaged.

Well, I liek very much the example given by Leowezy. Interesting so much! The only thing I could share would be a shipwreck in Rocas, a distant island in Cariocas, but I did not created or even think about details like number of victims, when it happens, etc. Anyway, I know I was not the first one to map a shipwrekc in OGF - there is at least one in Onnutu, and a flooded fort in Carispoole.

(if this message was posted twice, sorry, because I wrote before but it did not show after save)

Here is my non-entry for the week.

Irhoborin Refugee Settlement.

http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Irhoborin_Refugee_Settlement

The disaster is completely human-made, in this case - the presumed Commonian Civil War.

The only thing I am dissatisfied about, in this creation, is that I placed it in Commonia, given how unstable that place is, in the "meta" sense (i.e. people coming and mapping implausible European cities and North American subdivisions within a few hours driving of this third world catastrophe). I wish I'd placed it somewhere else, in collaboration with someone. But in general OGF mappers aren't very interested in creating poor or war-torn countries. Everybody wants to craft their little private Utopias - I'm guilty of that as much as anyone.

@Luciano: There was/ there is a collaborative project about a "problematic" country, Suvuma, but IsleƱo did not decide the rules yet. Maybe Suvuma could be a good new place to Irhoborin.

My Goytakanya is another problematic one, exactly because Suvuma, but there are not place to refugee camps here because Goytakanya is just the placv where the people wants to go out, hehe...

Anyway, my vote is yours!

@BMSOUZA - Heh, thanks for the vote! But I'm not actually making an entry - I think the winner should be something NEW, and not something done long ago. I only shared as an example for others.

Another "non entry": http://opengeofiction.net/#map=18/20.75913/86.70433 - the Nooqubar Slum in Gobras City.

Unfortunately the surrounding mapping around Nooqubar Slum is a bit sparse, but imagine Miami style hi-density expensive housing to the west; swamps to the south; the A2 as a railway right of way... There was a triangle of disused railway land quickly colonised by the slum...

I will actually in the future create a war-torn state in a bigger country, which is a communist country but the state is under Islam rule, which creates some troubles in the state itself. It is similar to the Rohingyas in Rakhine state in Myanmar.

Singkangia is quite safe from any disasters, just like RW Sinagpore, but possibly experience a few termors. Maybe flooding in my country did happen from time to time.

I think I'm gonna compete on this competition, go small but out the box and detailed. It occurs to me that there's no Deadline Date set, so I'm going to say that this competition will end on 14th of September; Midnight GMT.

Good luck all!

@Luciano Irhoborin Refugee Settlement is probably one of the best examples of how great this site can be. My original edits in Peurto Geo was a flood canal and a few of the names in the area describe the terrain such as Highground & Hochwasser. Joaquin Hills in Gobras City was named after Hurricane Joaquin which threatened the U.S. East Coast two years ago. I think I may start editing again in Peurto Geo making more flood walls and completing the navy base.
