New settlers arrived and are applying for a piece of land !

Posted by SwissCrusader on 27 April 2018 in English (English)

Hello

I am an active OSM contributor and I've always had some geofictitious worlds in my head that meet the requirements here (modern world fiction) and I would be glad to join the project for mapping my ideas in your world.

I tried to join like several years ago but my account was terminated after hours, for some unknown reasons, without me being able to do a single commit. So I hope the project is still active and that I will be able to participate in it.

If I understand, I must prove my skills by populating an area of a common zone with JOSM, create some test cities etc., and then if I am active enough I will be able to take possession of an available country.

I do not know how to get in touch with other members in case there are some mandatory ways of mapping, like some unwritten customs I should know, in addition to those written on the wiki home page etc. but anyway if I do any mistakes please let me know by PM before banning me !

I hope you understand my motivation in the project. See you at Commonia's best beach resorts !

I mean: Start building some small towns/settlements instead of super cities

Hello and welcome to OGF (not OSM)!

Over here, basically you have to start literally from scratch. Not like OSM where there are already satellite photos for you to draw on. If you would like to know how to create realistic cities, see http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Making_realistic_cities

At the very least, you must map for seven days (or longer for some) in a blue territory, like Commonia. Then you can get your territory. What do you want for your territory anyway? (like is it SE Asian, East Asian, European etc?)

To get in touch with other mappers, click on the username. Try to click on mine which is blue. Then click 'send message' to send a message. Otherwise, use this link: http://api.opengeofiction.net/user/USERNAME and replace USERNAME with others' username.

Other customs to follow:

  • Collaboration is the key. So don't isolate yourself.

  • If you get your wiki account, don't try to write too much stuff over what you have not even mapped. Beware of overwikification.

  • Try not to post too much on the user diaries. But here is a good platform to showcase your mapping.

  • There are sometimes a big hu-ha about using iD, so utilise JOSM as much as possible.

  • Read the FAQ if you have any other questions.

Zhenkang, thanks for the answer ! Later I may need a cold or temperate terrain with open water to the East, large enough for 7-8 provinces. "Northeastern Confederation" (UL082) would be perfect, also UL074 would do it. But anyway I come back after the 7 days of testing and see what is available.

Err.. anothet custom is that you can only claim a small territory, unless your mapping skills are realy superb.

Obviously I see that the countries are reeeeaaaaaallly bigger than I imagined ! I am mapping on a small area of Commonia and the distances between my features always end up very big, so it's obvious that a small to middle sized territory will be way enough if I want to do 7-8 provinces.

Macedonia has 50+ provinces, and is very little ._.
