Making Map Overlays

Posted by Tito_zz on 24 December 2017 in English (English)

Hi all! As i am developing my country √únglend I would like to make a Layer for all roads I wanna build. I already made the graphics, but I would like to see how the 'big boys' do it and if it is right. This is the picture

before you trace your drawing in JOSM, I'd advise you to check this out.

Err. I find that the road system is not realistic as you think.

I'm putting aside the whole issue of the road design, and give some advice which might help you more than just simply critiquing the roads.

Start terrain first, because that will help you subsequently design roads and rail that make sense. How? Because the terrain you build will then dictate where roads, rail, cities, etc can go.

You've got some luck here. You have several neighbors you can talk with to get topographical ideas from, and in particular Tigeria is nicely developed topographically. They've got everything set out right up to your borders - rivers, mountains, infrastructure. So I would reach out to them to see if they can tell you about the terrain they've got already in place on their side of the border, and start to grow your country's physical shapes from those.

Even if you can't get an answer right away, if you know what you're looking at, you will see that Tageria has designed all you need to start with the topography of your side of the Tigeria border.

I got very lucky to have detailed neighbors. I asked them first what they have topographically on their sides of my borders, and then from there I designed Caladea's landform. Based on that collaborative landforming, I know that I have a country that will have to have infrastructure mostly on the coast, and the infrastructure that goes up to the North will have to be in that central river valley, and almost none on the borderlands. Here are some visuals of that topographical stage of planning Caladea: https://imgur.com/a/nfxKv
