Adding To The Wiki

Posted by Trombonist2003 on 24 August 2017 in English (English)

At what point of a nation's development would it be appropriate to create a Wiki Page for it while not Overwikifying it? I was wonering as I was planning for a Wiki Page for my nation, but am not sure if my nation was even nearly developed enought to even think about planning for one.

Thanks, Trombonist2003

I think a basic main page for your country early on is fine. More than fine - it's a good idea to let everyone see what you're envisaging for your country.

There are guidelines on overwikification here.

I think it's good for the wiki page to serve as a general introduction to the country, i.e. "X is a communist state where most people live on the southern coastline, and it is a post-colonial country that still has major ethnic conflicts between settlers and indigenous peoples".

Other than that, I think a good principle is to only write about things that have actually been physically mapped. Otherwise it's kind of disappointing to go through the wiki and read interesting information on a place, only to visit the country on the map and find that it's mostly blank. Similarly, it's disappointing when someone has written a lot about things that wouldn't directly appear on a map (like the history or culture of a country) I get interested in their country and I go look at their map and it's mostly empty. I feel like those things should wait until the country's mapping is fairly developed.

So for my country (Tiey), the wiki page is just a rough explanation of what the country is, and then a section explaining the physical geography of the island because that's something that has actually been mapped out and benefits from further explanation.

You might be overwikifying if:

  • You spend more time on the wiki than on the map
  • You frequently produce wiki articles without text (i.e. just pictures and an infobox)
  • Your country has more wiki articles than place nodes

I have seen these things. I was once a serial overwikifier ... I have admitted my problem. There is no cure - only recovery.

@ Luciano I am actually grateful you stopped me overwikifying.

I am actually guilty of overwikifying. Actually, if you have ideas for your country (history, new infrastructure, unappealing expressways) which has not been mapped, put in a sandbox before moving to the actual wiki page. I planned to do some of that when I get back my wiki account after the exams.
