Line trouble!

Posted by sortofjack on 6 January 2018 in English (English)

I created a small island called Felipina a few days ago, but I created it in an unauthorised region and so it was moved by an admin. Now it lies off the west coast of Hammersmith, in the Isle of Charlington.

The issue I've discovered is that - while the roads and docks I created are still fine and proportioned - the outine of the island itself is a 'line' and not an 'area' meaning that I cannot fill it in.

I shouldn't need to explain the complications that would arise with a network of roads that are placed into the middle of the ocean with no land to support them, so I would like to know if there is any way I can change the coastline to an area without having to completely redraw the shape of the island! (It took me a while)

Many thanks!

Welcome to OGF, and happy mapping. Sorry to be a bore, but user diaries are actually NOT intended to be used as diaries. If you want to highlight and share your work, have a look on the Forum (link in bar at top of OGF screen).

@ADB52 I actually made this post to ask a question if you read the last paragraph - the previous text is just providing context :)

You should make sure the line is closed, then tag it as water—coastline and then check the blue edge is outside the island. If not press R. Then wait for it to be added to the map.

Sarepava's help was correct, but will only work if you use JOSM, which I doubt. So I did the job for you. There is one small point where the coastline may be intersecting itself, so I do not give a guarantee, but in a few hours from now you should be able to see your island. Happy mapping from then !

Yep. You had a self-intersection. That OGF 'coastline patrol' feature is working well. I Deleted one node and that should - theoretically - solve it. Now just be patient... (or do a coastline patrol yourself tomorrow)

Your streets in the village are too close, BTW. Distances need to be larger.

I fixed the self intersection.

Your highways are a bloody mess. http://opengeofiction.net/way/10401234

@wangi thankyou for the very constructive comment, friend. The roads you highlighted aren't highways, they are small roads inside the area. If you would like to provide some form of feedback I'd be happy to take on board what you have to say, but I don't think there's much I can do with "a bloody mess".

@Marcello thankyou for the help! And I'll be sure to fix up my streets soon - it was my first ever edit so I hope you can forgive me!

You need to draw roads - linear - not spaghetti. One road = one line, with nodes at the intersections.

@wangi see, that wasn't difficult. Will do, thanks.

Looks already better. By the way, a 'dock' is (only) a body of water, not the complete structure with quays included. So now you are having a piece of water overlapping your (is)land.

No worries. You get there. It will take some time. I (mapping well over a year) still discover new things (and still have a secret landuse experiment place somewhere hidden in Commonia).

Nah,

Not really. You now have the 'dock' completely in the ocean, basically a piece of water overlapping another piece of water - not really usefull IMHO. A 'dock' is only usefull if created on the landside of a coastline. Look for 'shipwreck dock' on your island (and feel free to remove it ;-) .
