Tips for creating a medium sized city

Posted by tommypoo on 4 August 2017 in English (English)

Hi all,

I've started to create a medium sized city in the central area of my country I would like to get ideas and tips from others.

Stats: Name: Karovslak Population; City: 67,600 Metro: 103,000 Style: European River City Other info: I want the central city to be rather commercialized and the outer suburbs to have pockets of market places.

Can't wait to hear your ideas, Tommypoo

Location: Yendatt Road, Karovslak, Wynot

If I were you I would look for inspiration both in OpenStreetMap (where Europe seems pretty decently mapped) as well as on OGF itself (where some mappers have drawn pretty good and inspirational examples). Make a rough sketch on paper first (or in a drawing program if you prefer that).

Most cities are subject to (natural) limitations: it might be an idea to map the river first, and then settlements. Your country is totally blank at the moment. Draw some basic natural anchor points first (mountains, rivers flowing from mountains to sea etc.) - there is an article 'how to draw realistic countries' - you can find it in the FAQ somewhere.

Take care with dimensions, BTW: the one building block you have now is only 10 metres wide between 2 streets. Even for a cramped mediaeval center that seems tight to me.

happy mapping !

Don't start with the modern town. Map it like it would have been a hundred, or two hundred years ago. You then map the wider roads on top of the originals, adapt the townscape.

hello i like your design of your town and my only questions are why is there only a section of the river and that might just be a glitch and there is a primary road leading no where like Marcello said you need the physical features i also think you need to construct the road then the town but that's my opinion

Happy mapping
