Tips on starting a city 10 months ago

So I decided to start by setting up the topography and developing an early history of the city (ie origin story). The city started as a medieval castle that developed into a local hub. I assume that’s a pretty common city origin story for a European city? :)

thanks for the help + suggestions!

@Halvarda I know it wasn’t an accusation, it is pretty funny that we came up with the same names though :)

Thanks for your ideas! I’m thinking I’m going to center the city around the river mouth, so I’ll set that topography up first so that I can make the city true to the landscape.

Also, @Halvarda - my country’s name has quite the backstory. It was the name I gave to my biggest Minecraft city - Qara. I then named my first “practice” country Qara and so I carried that name over to my current country and just changed it to sound a bit more Nordic. I assume you own Keira?

As far as the names:

In my opinion, it’s actually really interesting to have RW inspiration in OGF - the key word being inspiration, not copying.

In my mapping, where the main language is heavily based on RW Swedish (with some Norwegian, Danish, Finnish, and English influence), I definitely take ideas and naming motifs from the RW, but not whole names. I take into consideration the meaning of certain words or fragments.

Some examples:

Nykojpeng’s name is actually pretty similar to the RW Nyköping, Sweden. But “Nykojpeng” actually is built from common stems (in both Swedish and my conlang): “ny” (new) + “kojpeng” (town).

“Fvilhävn” and “Kvihävn” from “havn” suffix (ex. København/Copenhagen), meaning “haven”

“Johanstorp” from (name) + “torp” (farm) formula (RW ex. Anderstorp, literally meaning “Anders’s farm”)

So I think it’s great to identify naming themes that you want to take from the RW and then customize them to your country.

Good luck!

A new OGF about 1 year ago

Interesting idea, but that sounds like overkill. OGF is (like the real world) an evolving place. Additionally, OGF is working on making two new continents that are untouched and currently unavailable (with the exception of the beginning mapper island and one island territory in the southwest). The only thing those continents have is a name. Everything else will develop organically and we’ll see where it goes. So, if you’re looking for a “clean slate” to start on, those territories would be a great place.

That said, I do think that it would be cool for OGF (in the distant future) to add another sort of extension or maybe even a mappable moon… but as long as people keep joining, mapping, and staying, OGF will expand over time.

Also, Eretra. As a native English speaker I think that you’re English is pretty natural-sounding. Not broken at all :)

Okay, thank you so much!

AN (Assembly of Nations) - Process of Joining about 1 year ago

@Alessa

I you are willing to do that, I would really appreciate it! A couple of things to note:

  • I prefer that the name be listed with the diacritic on the first a, so “Kåra” rather than “Kara”, but it can just be alphabetized as if it were “Kara”
  • I actually created a flag design for the country just yesterday. I have it in an .svg format (if I understood correctly, that’s how it’s uploaded, but I can also get it in a .pdf, .jpg, or .png format if needed). It’s on the wiki page, so let me know if you aren’t able to get it from there.

Thanks!

So what do I need to do to join? Is there someone I need to ask or do I just go ahead and edit the AN wiki to put my country in it?
