2016 Summer Geolympiad planning, form to see what countries are interested in what sports

Posted by Ernestpcosby on 11 June 2016 in English (English)

Hi, everyone. As you probably know by now, Quentinsburgh, Freedemia will be hosting the 2016 Summer Geolympiad . I've sort of been unofficially put in charge of the event since I'm hosting, and I wanted to kind of get a figure of different countries and different sports.

However, unlike simpler ones like the OGFIFA World Cup and the International Foosball World Cup, there are a LOT of different events that need to be considered, and some will likely have more demand than others. Some countries will be passionate about some events and not about others.

Hence, this form.

So, to sort of simplify things, I made this Google FORM that it would be very helpful for everyone with a country that will be participating to fill out. It simply asks the name of your country, sports your country would be interested in, any top 3 sports you want to do well in (BESIDES SOCCER, there's way too much demand for that and we aren't opening that can of worms again XD), and your OGF username so that I know what username is associated with what country.

So, here's the FORM! Please fill it out, it should only take 5-7 minutes or so.

I ask that each user fill out an entry for each country that's participating. For example, I'll be filling it out once for Freedemia and once for Woolonia.

If any the admins would like me to share the "responses" part of the form with them, I will gladly do so! Any constructive criticism would help a lot.

Your fellow mapper, Ernestpcosby

Can mixed martial arts be a pontential event?

Could you include athletics as well as marathon?

I've filled it out, took me 2 mins at max :) Nice idea, and a good simple way to organise it. I've put emphasis on Canoeing, Rowing and Horses for Kojo, because I feel like it's not a huge sporting nation but perhaps can excel in some small niche :)

Looks cool! Are there any requirements for participation? My territory is still under construction (as in, I've barely even started mapping and writing it...) but I would gladly participate if allowed to.

I added athletics, mixed martial arts, and handball to the list based off the requests above.

@dryerlint, As of right now I don't think there are any requirements, and you should be able to participate, but it might be helpful to get an idea of what you have in mind for your country or countries. I'd also say that similarly to the bidding process for the Geolympiad and for the OGFIFA World Cup, if there's very little mapping and very little wiki information, I'd probably say that your country probably would only come in 3rd, or more likely below in more popular events, just out of respect for the mappers that have gotten further. But definitely, I'd welcome all nations to participate though unless I'm told different from the admins or anything else.

To be honest, I don't mind coming in behind; Iblania is a small country so I don't expect any amazing performances (unless nobody applies to my category, in which case, feel free to make us win by default haha)

I've selected "mountain biking" as the most important sport, since it is a mountain country. But like I said, you don't have to rank us particularly high.

Thank you for your help!

I did Hoppon and Lallemand. Although Hoppon is populous it has three niche/ traditional sports it excels a, Karuta, Hopponese Mixed Martial Arts and Sumo are quite popular and other sports have smaller following. Certain regions of Hoppon are very mountainous (high-altitude) and are quite good at Marathons.
Lallemand is a small country but do to a certain ethnic group, The Pagbos averaging at 6'1 per man and 5'10 per woman they excel at basketball and can produce Usain Bolt-like athletes who are tall but suprisingly able to run fast. This makes Lallemand very good at track and basketball.

@Ernestpcosby: I'm not sure what's being planned for this article, but I wouldn't recommend trying to generate results for every sport. As you know, most of our world is still unmapped, and the real 2012 Olympics wiki page doesn't have results tables (it does have a medals table and a participants table... but personally I'd exclude those too).

My recommendation would be to create a "Highlights" section of the article, which would simply showcase one memorable performance/victory from each country that shows interest. In fact, you could greatly reduce your workload by inviting people to write their own "highlight" themselves, which would allow you to focus on the venues, infrastructure, marketing, ceremonies, controversies, etc.

That said, you're free to do this as you wish... but those would be my suggestions anyway. :-)

Thank you for your suggestion, Isleno! I had originally planned on doing top three medals for each event, which was my primary reason for the form. However, I may take your advice and just let people write their own details. I only see one possible problem, and that's if a lot of people are interested in the same event. Do you have any advice to avoid the same fighting over events as we saw with the OGFIFA a while back?

Hm... well, one helpful thing is that most Olympic sports have a lot more events than people realize. For example, within "aquatics" there are actually 46 events (8 diving events, 34 swimming events, 2 synchronized swimming events, 2 water polo events). If you look at the list of how many Olympic events are included in each sport, the total for 2016 is 306 events... 918 medals! Every sport has at least 2 events (6 medals).

One way to avoid fighting is by letting each country claim only one highlight, that way nobody can grab too many top spots. Alternatively you could just assign the highlights yourself, awarding one or two highlights to each country that participated in the survey.

Neo Delta has a strong tradition in female sports, so that can help when it comes to dividing the medals.

Alternatively you could assign OGF nations real world countries and use the actual Olympic results. Would save a lot of effort in simulating events or choosing winners and would give some randomness.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

@Isleno, I like your ideas. Perhaps I'll use the form results to assign 2 highlights to each country so that they don't overlap and so each nation can get a result similar to what they wanted. Then each country could write the actual highlight themselves. How does that sound?

Sounds to me like another good Isleno idea - can pm you my 'highlights' when you let me know what sports they would be in.

But what about the 'unclaimed results' - who decides who won one of the many events that won't be mentioned, or is it only the highlights that can be talked about later, e.g. in a country's sport wiki?

Sorry for the late reply, I forgot to check back in here. Your plan sounds great, ernestpcosby. As for 'unclaimed results' I imagine they'd just be left unmentioned in the article. And presumably future countries could contact ernestpcosby and write a few new highlights for themselves.
