Airports in OGF

Posted by Jamie Clumpas on 17 July 2019 in English (English)

Hello once again,

I find that on OGF, people are very stringent and exact with most aspects of mapping and verisimilitude, for example, when I asked for feedback, I was given some great info about the radius of a rail curve and made appropriate adjustments. I think this is great, and it's part of the reason why I enjoy OGF so much.

Unfortunately, I think one place where this doesn't extend is airports. Airports are, in reality, quite complex, and it is understandable that not every catering building etc. is accounted for, but some airports in OGF are not even slightly realistic, and resources like these are helpful, but definitely don't give all the necessary info for mappers.

I'm not saying this from a point of mockery or trying to over-judge other peoples work (he who lives in a glass house...), but I really feel like this is one area that's really damaging the realism in OGF. As an IRL pilot, some of the design on this map confuses the hell out of me.

I agree. Even though I only have flight simming as a hobby, if I were tasked to land at some of these places, I'd probably crash and die since there is no major ATC facilities mapped. Which makes me wonder; do ATC Centers (Paris Center, Fort Worth Center, etc.) get mapped as well?

Yes, sometimes I wish there were a wall of shame. There are just ridiculous examples out there. The same goes for railway stations and motorways as well.

On the other hand we should respect the users which don't focus on airports for whatever reason.

We could have a wall of fame instead. Maybe as a pilot you are able to judge which airports qualify.

This might help: https://osm3s.opengeofiction.net/overpass-turbo/?w=type:way+and+aeroway=runway&R

This actually might be a good idea for the wiki's Featured Map of the month. We could showcase an airport that is mapped well but also takes into account the surrounding environment so that the rest of us can learn by example.

It's important to remember that no one here is a professional cartographer. My educational background is in urban planning and OGF has plenty of lackluster cities that make me cringe, but this is also what we signed up for. But it's best to lead by example, so I agree that a "wall of fame" would be a good idea. Maybe include it in the OGF:Making realistic airports page.

Have you built an airport we can see as an example? I feel fairly happy with mine but I know they are far from perfect.

Im just going to say one thing in agreement:

Based on your definition, I think the best airport in OGF right now is Valaga's Valka International Airport. Would you say that this is a good example of an airport?

Yes, it is a great airport.

Hey thanks to see my airport featured!! It is pretty good but I can give anyone a tip: Look at real world airports. Either on Osm, Google Earth or in Reallife and get inspired! If you spend enough time surfing osm or Google Earth your airports will turn better! And being a flight sim enthusiast (like me) is also of course very helpful!

I also want to feature another amazing airport in OGF (very underrated!): https://opengeofiction.net/#map=13/-41.9844/28.4538

2 other good underrated airports I can think of (both in Marapura District, Gobrassanya): https://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/19.1723/88.7371 and https://opengeofiction.net/#map=14/18.8957/88.9585

The latter is good, the former has no name to the runways or taxiways.

What about [https://opengeofiction.net/#map=14/-40.0215/159.6017] and [https://opengeofiction.net/#map=14/-40.3286/159.5219] - both designed from Aiki for Stanton, New Carnaby in the FSA?

Please tell us your ideas where improvement is needed!

You have already criticized the tutorial as categorically wrong without telling us any detail. Someone spends hours to work out a tutorial which is (in my eyes, I'm not an expert in airport planning, but have some technical background) quite good and, more important, would improve 98% of the current OGF airports if the mappers would have a look at it. So, this page does what tutorials should do, to explain how to improve airports.

Btw: no one of us is perfect, but most... at least some mappers are willing to improve their knowledge, so please, tell us what is "categorically wrong" and how we can improve this.

Btw: I don't see that this is a special problem with airports!

Although some people know about railway curves, I usually don't see it on the map (radius and kinks). Also railway switches... guys... just listen: switch angles should be somewhere between 3° and 6°, maybe 10° in some special cases, but not 30° or more.

And we could extend this discusion to every other issue as well. So please, if you have some special knowledge about a topic, improve tutorial pages or create new ones.

There needs to be a bit more help on the wiki. I had trouble figuring out how to accurately map one. But, here is my try: https://opengeofiction.net/#map=15/-43.0932/138.6729

I agree that the tutorial has been really helpful and, as always, the best thing you can do is look at RL examples. That said, even as a bit of an AvGeek I don't think I have built the best airports. Here's Dunwic's which is still a WIP

@mstr - I'd love to add some more to the tutorials! I don't disagree that they're absolutely a useful resource and a lot of hard work went into them, I am only saying that this is something that could be lacking a bit in OGF, and I would love to be on hand to fix some of the mistakes/ambiguities, I just don't really know if I'm allowed?

It's a wiki so as long as you're sensitive to the original writer I don't see the problem. A better idea might be to just tell us some of the way it's inaccurate which you have yet to do.

@Jamie Clumpas extensive changes should not be done without asking the original writer/main editors! You can copy&paste the current article into your sandbox and make changes and proposals there. I'm still waiting for your improvements!
