OpenGeofiction

3D buildings

Posted by Jesus Antonio on 21 November 2018 in English (English)

I ve saw a project called f4 that mainly consists in 3D building rendering wich looks very cool specially for that shadows. Also stjurs diary about skeptchup

Just imagine how beatiful will be to see cities like Odrava, Gobras, Abralona, Beregorod, Antigo, Baradin, Vodeo, Khaiwoon, etc. Instead of being plain 2D, it will be 3D.

Could one day can have that 3D building here in opengeofiction?

Though the map looks very cool, how exactly it was made isn't being shared by the company, as I understand. Which is a real shame, because it's automatic and would make OGF more alive. It would so be hard to actually implement it, host the map separately and so on, so we'll probably never see it here :(

maybe this year we won't see it, but in 2 years that tecnology would be more shared, so it might come true that dream! The only thing we have to do it's to don't losing hopes

While this does look cool, I am more concerned that the servers on OGF won't be able to handle the load of having 3D buildings, and even if we allow someone else to do it for the OGF team, I am concerned that the person will flake out.

We've saw it happen with Nominatim, which despite promises that "it'll be back up" and "automated," has been pretty much dead since May. And the last thing I want is another thing that breaks and is dead because the person in charge of it has left OGF/suffered author existence failure.

So, I feel that until we are confident that the servers don't go down, and that the person won't flake, it may be best to not have that here.

There are ways of importing .osm files into SketchUp, see https://youtu.be/KKUGAZXU4dY. If you want the buildings to automatically render in 3D they need the height tag though.

You surely need to upload terrain data as well unless the city is utterly flat. Nothing to stop people creating their own Sketchup models, it can be useful to check the scale is accurate. Maybe even 3D printing or card models of OGF landmarks?

These are really nice, stjur! I'll surely try making one of my old town when it's more developed.
