TopoMap

Posted by JoJoBa on 8 July 2019 in English (English)

Why doesn't the TopoMap update it's rendering from zoom 10 and further zoomed out? It stayed the same for 2 months or even more.

It's come up more than once, before. Sorry, I don't have links to those discussions.

End result: If I recall correctly, lower zoom renders on the TopoMap layer are updated only when Thilo kicks it off manually. I will sometimes send him a note to update a certain region (e.g. Makaska).

Mysteriously some layers do update regularly. Looking at my territory's NW end at level 10, I can see the coastline of the islands and some land (or ocean) cover fine. The roads on the other hand and some inland lakes somewhere else to the SE are not updtaed.

@Toadwart - it's only LOWER zooms that require manual update. For more than a year, I had the strange situation where Makaska was fine at Zoom 10+, but for lower (1-9), it showed just the barest outline, when the lakes were new, 100km long coastline segments, etc.

I am talking about different layers (coastline, landuse, roads) on the same level (in this case 10). So the level 10 is a mixture of old and new.

A bit like when the coastline is changed on the standard view. You see the new roads or buildings or landuse after a few minutes, but the ocean layer takes an hour or so to update. I often see a new beach with the old coastline still visible shortly after an update.

I guess that's a Thilo question. I DO know what you're talking about. I saw that phenomenon a few years ago, when I started Topo work for Ardisphere - but I thought Thilo had repaired the problem. I haven't seen it in the last few years around my work.

Hm. Actually, my previous comment was incorrect. I AM seeing this odd mixture of old and new in the render. I can point to recent work on railroads in Swift / La Porte Parishes, Makaska. The railroads were added at the same time more detailed landuse=forest were added. But on certain zooms (e.g. 11), the new detailed forests show up fine, but the railroads do not. On the other hand, older work in Elizabeth Parish, to the west, shows both detail forest as well as railroad work.

So apologies for my incorrect assessment. It remains a problem, just as I'd identified several years ago in work in the Ardisphere.

The lower zoom levels of the TopoMap have been updated.

Those updates happen irregularly, because the TopoMap has a separate rendering database for lower levels, which cannot be updated incrementally.

Interestingly, as Luciano noted, it is actually a fact that railway data are read from the lowzoom database up to level 11, whereas for landuse it's only level 10:

Thank you for that thilo, very cool!

Anyways yeah, some data is still rendered on outer zooms. Most notably land use. I can see my city's land use (I use mostly residential) from anywhere, but no woodlands, grasslands render or networks.
