I now return

Posted by Mike's World on 26 March 2020 in English (English)

Wow! We're living history right now. I was planning on riding the ogf break until summer, however, as you know what's going on there's almost nothing to do, so I'm back to mapping.

My goals from the last diary ended up mediocre, I had fun but didn't triumph. The girlfriend part is going to be a long term goal as long as it takes.

However, I did start a business drawing custom maps for people, and that's been successful. I suggest you guys should start trying to do something similar.

Stay safe!

Mike

Interesting, can you tell more about the business? How much money do you earn per map and how long does it take?

Ok, so I ask people if they're interested in map a of their favorite place. They give me an answer and I draw a map of it. They range from the Dunder Mifflin building to a map of Thailand. It's a great way to connect with people and they're happy to get it.

For now the maps are cheap, I let the customers decide on the right price, around $5 a map on average. However I've got ranges from $1 to $20. The time is long, about 1 and a half hours for decent quality per map.

Trust me there is a market for this. I've gotten 8 orders in 6 days and earned around $26 in 4 days. (Couple of orders are pending for price). If CO-VID 19 slows down then I'll bring my business to flea markets this spring and summer.

Do you also draw maps of fictional worlds? If you show your work on OGF video game creators or novelists could hire you as a worldbuilder.

^

It's very interesting work. You get to follow your passion, and you get money for it. Basically, a win-win.

My publisher actually did hire a dedicated mapmaker to make the map for a fantasy book I wrote, so it's definitely a thing people do! Map came out really well, too.

Yes, now I'm not good at coding, so I don't know if I could make one on a video game. Drawing for a novel would be neat. I'll look out to see if I can be hired to do that.

It's been a while and that getting-a-girlfriend goal still hasn't materialized, huh?

Not yet, it has to happen someday...odds are yes.
