Your stretch is roughly correct.
The first map, as found in the map browser, is a mercator projection which retains shapes but distorts areas. Your "stretch" is approximates an equal-area projection and is thus more accurate (though probably not exact) for wrapping on a globe.

As for your question about correctness... no, it's not very correct. If you did the same thing to Earth, you'd get the globe on the left (compared to a true globe on the right):
The Mercator projection you see on OGF greatly exaggerates sizes near the poles, but not near the equator. So to correctly convert it to an equirectangular projection (to create the globe) you can't just squeeze the whole map uniformly. Each latitude should be squeezed by a different amount. The areas near the poles need to be squeezed a lot, the mid latitudes somewhat, and the tropics just a little.
Thilo says there may be some changes to the new continents, so you may want to hold off on making revisions until they're finalized. Great job though!

Looks like the main mistake I made was using a square grid for the projection, and what I need should look more like this:
I think I've found the right formula to create an accurate grid projection, and will see if I can get it worked out so that when Thilo finalizes The New World I can produce a somewhat accurate globe.
@BMSOUZA: After I 'discovered' The New World, my first thoughts were:
1. Wow. Nice.
2. Name it after a friend of mine.
3. Claim all the land, its people, and its wealth for the king of Spain.
4. Try to make a globe.
#4 seemed like the best option. :)
