OGF-Wiki

Posted by histor on 3 October 2020 in German (Deutsch).

Why the OGF-Wiki needs terrible long time to show up? Is it only at me - or a generally problem?

It’s a general problem we have for some time.

Modules mediawiki.legacy.commonPrint,shared and mediawiki.skinning.interface are broken and takes a long time to load, according to a comment made by User:Austinhuang in this diary: https://opengeofiction.net/user/Toadwart/diary/2977

Yeah, definitely not just you.

The admins’ reluctance to comment on it publicly is disappointing and concerning.

I think there should be some kind of assistant, or a trusted person who would like to volunteer in case such errors occur, considering that the wiki is important after all (even with it being much less important than the map itself). I don’t know who that might be (not me), but the OGF Admins should consider this option, and see whom they can trust for such things.

Meanwhile, consider renting a wiki for free on websites which provide such services (Miraheze being my recommendation), and writing stuff there until the current issue is resolved.

I think an entry was posted in July because there were problems and everyone else was experiencing the same. I messaged wangi only to be told months later by someone else that nothing can be done unless thilo gives the perms.

I must admit, I am also a bit disappointed in wangi’s lack of communication with this problem, all thats needed is just a small diary entry explaining everything and what can and can’t be done at this time, especially when I messaged him twice to no reply.

Hey Halvarda, sorry you feel that way. I’m not sure what kind of statement you’re expecting the admin team to make. The wiki has been in this condition for several months now, and I thought it was obvious that if anyone from the admin / moderator team had the capacity to do anything about it, they would. Unfortunately, we don’t, because we lack the full access to the server, which only Thilo, who is currently away, has.

I am strongly against using wangi as the proverbial scapegoat for this problem, or any community problem really. I know the conversations you’ve had with him in the past didn’t go smoothly, but I thought this has been resolved. He is an integral member of the admin team and doing a very good job.

@eklas I guess I didn’t think it was that obvious. Any kind of statement is better than silence, because silence implies apathy. It makes it seem as if you don’t care, even if you care a whole lot.

I’d think that at some point you (the admin team) would consider abandoning the barely functioning wiki and moving everything to one of the many alternatives. How long are you willing to wait for thilo to come back until you guys consider doing that?

Btw, sorry if I’m coming across as terribly irritated or demotivated. The lack of wiki isn’t going to make me stop mapping on OGF (in case I made it sound that way). However, having one definitely adds to the whole experience.

Right, and I’m sorry if I was too straightforward in my first reply. I am actually currently working on a document that compiles most of the important information and tutorials hosted on the wiki, and which will hopefully serve as a replacement at least partially.

The problem is that Thilo is the owner of the website, so it’s not exactly ours to decide what can and can not be done. We can’t even edit the shortcuts on the upper panel. In the admin team, we haven’t yet discussed the option of moving the wiki to a different server, but I personally wouldn’t be in favor of such thing. I think would be a temporary fix at best and only create confusion in the long run. Besides that, all rules and terms and conditions etc. should be hosted directly here where we have full control over them.

@ MisterBean: You can not “move the whole thing” because it is not yours. It is the project of Thilo - and you only are partizipicing without any paying. He has the copyright of the name “OpenGeoFiction” and the shape of the continents (as example) and is owner of the webside.

The only thing you can do is set up an similair project with an other name.
