Luciano's Mapper's Challenge #2 - May, 2016

Posted by Luciano on 5 May 2016 in Korean (한국어)

Sorry that this new challenge is a little bit late. I have been very busy offline, and have set a new record, this past week: I haven't opened JOSM for 6 days straight. That seems like a record for me, since discovering OGF.

Luciano's Mapper's Challenge #2 - May, 2016

Some mappers are very good at focusing on a specific area and mapping it to an extremely complete level of detail. This challenge will probably be useless for those kinds of mappers. But for me, and I know for many others, it can be hard to find "focus" and hard to really, truly complete a given area. It's too easy to flit around the map, working on various things, and never really reach a sense of completion with a given area.

Arguably, the ONLY time I've really, truly completed an area is with my little Ardispherian exclave of Sarangdo. And that was more than a year ago, now, and further, it still could use more work.

So the challenge for the month of May is to try to concentrate on mapping on a single area. I would say maybe a maximum of 100km²(which is the size of a compact city)

The challenge has two levels.

  • Advanced Challenge: for the month of May, ONLY map in your chosen, focused area. There is always more to map. If streets feel complete, work on buildings. If land covers feel complete, work on naming things. If building outlines are complete, work on putting detailed information about shops, banks, schools, etc. You can go into micromapping, adding housenumbers or sidewalks or traffic lights and turn lanes.
  • Easy Challenge: for the month of May, chose some smallish area that you consider well-mapped and more-or-less complete in a way that you like, and try to reach that same level of completeness for your working area.

Like last time, this challenge is on the "honor system" - no one is going to check the accuracy of your claim. If you are interested in trying this challenge, just leave a note below, in the next few days. At the end of the month, we can make another diary post to see how poeple did.

This new challenge may be a bit "easy" for me, but only because I expect to continue to be very busy this month offline, so it will not require much work to avoid working on mapping other things. The area where I will be working is the western end of the Sovereign Duchy Tárrases - I want to see what it is like to now try to develop an area in detail having already put in place a complete set of contours.

Happy mapping!

I will do the Advanced callenge this month! I'm going to work on the area surrounding Alotes. Oh, and I will post an update about what I did everyday on my flickr.

I completely failed the previous challenge by narrowly concentrating on one urban area. Hopefully that tendency will work for me in May. I will be developing the west side and suburbs of Port Mallore, including the old royal hunting grounds, several stadiums, a refinery, a large cargo shipping terminal, a small airport, and maybe a shanty-town for good measure.

Actually I'm always working like the Advanced Challenge and I've been working on Trevers, with many parts already very detailed, and I've just finished Hollow Civil Park.

I will continue to do so in May. The city center will be restructured, as well as many east city neighborhoods. This restrucuring will include streets, new buildings, shops, atrractions and landmarks, subway stations and much more. Maybe I'll even start detailing parts of the port. So I'll be doing the Advanced Challenge!

I'll be trying to further advance in Downtown Quentinsburgh. Got some done last night, actually.

That's a great challenge! I have to decide what to focus on - I was planning on doing something in Gobaras City and flitting around other bits and pieces. But I think I'll focus on Shadze-Ma and see where that goes. Filling in a blank map, contours first. Just one big town to map, so if I get that far it will be detailed.

I've been mapping exclusively in one area in Tircambry for the past month, and expect I'll be continuing there during May. It's 2-3 times larger than the suggested 100km², and I'm mapping historically, in the way that I intend to do Wesmandy. So far I'm at 1600, but I expect to get into the industrial era, and maybe even the 20th century, this month.

Not sure if this conforms to the challenge conditions or not!

Coincidentally I've already been doing this. Keep an eye on the city of Känton.

Based on the comments of many, here - to the effect of "alreadying working that way" - I concede this challenge might not be much of a "challenge" for some people.

But it is definitely a challenge for me - it's not my normal working style at all. Yesterday, I went in a did initial things in West Tárrases, and I found myself downloading a spot in Mahhal, hundreds of km away, because of some little tweak that had occurred to me needed doing. It was like an automatic habit. Fortunately, I caught myself in time.

Welcome to "randommappoholics anonymous"!

I'll be mostly focusing on topping off Decton, which I need to do, and Harcourt, which I was going to do anyway.

However, like the previous challenge, my time expenditure will slide over to spend more on the subject of the challenge, rather than focusing on the it entirely. As a result, I'm probably doing a combination of 1 and 2, although I don't know whether or not it is 'legal' to do so.

I like the idea of this new challenge, but I`m not sure if I am in again, hehehe. I am thinking where could I do this challenge...

*In fact, I did this in Rocas islands, and mainly in the only city of the islands. And I think only me and Luciano knows this place hehehe.

I would create ALL the house numbers and name the few places I did not name yet, but this task I can do in two or three days of edits, hehehe

*I still was doing the same about Bhagurah city and towns around. Its almost finished in central areas, (take a look in the main marketplace ) but, as I talk to Isleño, the "main point" in Goytakanya will be poor stilt houses, and I still need to build a lot of them.

But right now I am still focused about the central area of Campo Verde, and Barra da Grama too...

I dont know... but I am considering what I can do this month!

This month I am going to do the advanced challenge. However, instead of detailing an already existing area, I am going to create a new city, called Borders City, on the east coast of my island. Why Borders City? That's because this area is the only place in my country with a national border - to Mallorjhe, and there's also a bridge connecting the two countries.
