Eastern Ulethan Organisation of Independent Allies

Posted by Rasmus Rasmusson on 14 February 2016 in Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch)

On the wiki a (so far small) discussion is going on about the creation of an international organisation called the Eastern Ulethan Organisation of Independent Allies (EUOIA; pronounce /youwoya/ or /eewoya/, although the name is still open for debate). So far the owners of Glaster (Yuanls), Mergany (Mstr), Wyster (me), and Østermark (Demuth) are involved, but since Eastern Ulethan is a vast area, more countries are welcome to participate.

Currently we are still discussing EUOIA's goals and purposes, with the possibility of making EUOIA an umbrella organisation that facilitates several separate treaties; if this system is adopted, it will be the choice of each member state which treaty it will sign and - therefore - which parts of EUOIA it will join.

Will be interesting to see how this evolves... I promise whiny little Østermark will be an irritation and punching bag for fellow members, and I mean that only in the best way!

If you wanted to explore the reasons behind the establishment of EUOIA you could think about the influence of Commonia, which - possibly - might have been a developed, heavily militarised nation in the early part of the 20th century. If that was the case, instability in Commonia could have precipitated an unlikely alliance between countries in Eastern Uletha, which If Commonia had ever been at all expansionist, are not that far away. And does the EUOIA have any role in Commonia today?

I like that idea, Ūdilugbulgidħū. It makes sense to connect this to the world war that's being discussed just now. Although I guess that is going to take a while to pin down! But this can be part of it, essentially a defense alliance. But there are also perhaps more economic reasons for why it might exist, for instance that the countries, small on their own, can have more economic clout, so it would be more of an economic rather than a defense alliance.

It would be useful to consider some other types of IRL ally organizations, their purposes and what they do to help shape this, I think. NATO is what comes to mind first of course, if we're talking defense, and of course the EU, which is not what I'm looking for. But - well, OAS, OPEC, the Nordic Council are just a few quite different alliances that could serve as models.

(And if we go for the defense alliance, I guess since Commonia has fractured into a somewhat anarchic collection of weak entities today, it's not such a threat anymore. Which would mean the EUOIA should have evolved into defense against other aggressions? Another purpose?)

And I guess I should be taking this discussion to the wiki... ;-)
