Mapping Lorotoban villages

Posted by CaboAzul on 29 April 2020 in English (English)

I’ve been working on Batuhitam (a province of the collaborative territory of Lorotoban). Since Lorotoban is analogous to Timor, I’ve been taking Indonesian geography into account. In OSM, Indonesia is not mapped completely, small towns often are just roads, so I do not have much to base small fishing villages off of.

I have begun a very rudimentary village on the island of Tenang off of the Batuhitam coast. The aforementioned village would be dependent on fishing for food and would not be well developed. So far I have a few huts and a path connecting them. Does anyone have suggestions for how I can develop and improve this village so as to make it more realistic?

Well, OSM doesn't really map this kind of thing, like you say - you have to 'go beyond', so look at other sources like aerial photos. And you could map more natural features. Perhaps something like this or this (but hopefully with more detail)?

The other thing to do is to dip in to Openstreetmap, do some real mapping of East Timor to get inspiration.

There is reasonable satellite imagery for sections.
