I noticed a very large change in the last few minutes looking at the real OpenStreetMap. All of the interstates just turned red and started rendering differently. Is this a rendering change that will eventually affect OpenGeofiction? What exactly happened in the first place? Just wondering.

It’s a major change of the OSM default style that has been in the making for a while:

And yes, you can expect the new style to be applied to OGF too, sooner or later.

I noticed the new changes too. We may want to expect new changes on OpenGeofiction sooner or later in the future.

Do you have any idea when the transition is coming to OGF?

Comment from BelpheniaProject on 31 October 2015 at 23:22

@Ernestpcosby I don’t know. Maybe we can wait and see if the changes make it to OGF…

I wonder if the new style rollout is connected with the absolutely terrible performance I’ve been having with Openstreetmap lately - I used to wish OGF could load as fast as OSM, but nowadays I tend to wish OSM would load as fast as OGF - if it would load at all. Anyone else seeing terrible lags with OSM? Oftentimes, these days, I get nothing but a blank gray map.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the new style on OGF. If people miss the “old” style, I assume the “histor” style (layer=H) will remain unchanged, and that’s largely derivative of the old style.

I just wish they had left tertiary roads more visible. I agree with the issues they spoke of with trunk roads being too green before, but I had hoped they might at least differentiate motorways and toll roads with a different color or somethings. Oh well. Probably just me.

Yes, the “green” roads are invisible in the old style, if they run through woods or parks. Green is generally no good colour for streets. Therefore it is better to make them red. But the motorways should have an other colour as the other streets - maybe the old blue.

So I think, in the “histor-style” for OGF the motorways will stay as blue and the primaries as red as in the old OSM-style. But the trunk-toads shall get an other colour - may be turquois or so. Toll-roads can get a side-line with small black points.

For me the main-aspect of the histor-style lays not on the roads, but at the rails and different symbols.

I was very surprised when I saw the new style in OSM, because I didn’t follow their news recently. But the longer I look at it, the more I like it. Different highway types were indeed too different before, too much touching the colors reserved for other features in some cases (forest/greenland, water…). But what I like the most is that railways are now much more visible in smaller zoom levels. That’s great. Only a pity that there still are zoom levels displaying freeways/trunks, but no railways (levels 5 and 6). I don’t like this subliminal “roads are more important than railways” statement, that does not fit into 21st century sustainable approaches… Well, but that’s a detail. :)

@Ernestpcosby: Installing new versions of the Mapnik style in OGF is a bit of work (am I right, @thilo?), on the one hand. On the other hand, it is clear that we want to have the same Mapnik version in OGF as in OSM. So just be pacient, I think one of the admins will update the style soon.

Ok, looks like it’s not that complicated! Thanks for updating OGF Mapnik!

Comment from isleño on 1 November 2015 at 18:16

Yes, thanks Thilo! I like it a lot. :-)

Very nice.

Comment from Ernestpkirby on 1 November 2015 at 19:52

Looks great, actually :)

Comment from Turnsole80 on 2 November 2015 at 01:05

Yes! I was going to ask if we could update the layer, but assumed it would be too intensive on the servers.

Thank you for making it so!

I love the new colour scheme - however, i dislike VERY much that now everything which is tagged as planned has gone from the map completely (in the last recent versions of the old style, it was drawn opaque). I think, as this is a fictional project and everyone wants to show his or her idea of the further development of his/her country, railroads and highways which are under construction should be kept visible.

Well, I personally really like the Humaniatarian Map style which OSM offers. The most interesting feature of that style is that it differenciates between paved and unpaved raods - a feature which I intend to use a lot in my country. However, this style doesn’t display tunnels, which is kind of weird. Nevertheless, I really would love to see this style in OGF, too (a combination of the Humanitarian style with tunnels and the Histor style would be the non-plus-ultra for me (maybe not for others, I know ;) )!

Maybe, we should discuss about creating a new, OGF-specific style (for example on the base of the existing base style) which fits the need of this project more - like, as I said before, displaying stuff which is under construction as well as differentiating between road pavement, for example. Of course, this is mostly what I would like to see - maybe others would have other preferences. However, I think, there is no need to stick with the basic style that OSM delivers.
