Is an unusually cold season in Freedemia due to El Nino feasible?
Posted by Ernestpkirby on 17 January 2016 in English.I was just wondering, I know Freedemia is in an area that in general makes it extremely warm and humid, but could something like El Nino create an unusually cold season where temps dip into 30’s (F) or below 0 (C)? Comparing to other extremely humid places I had originally planned for minimum “winter” temperatures to be around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. I was thinking of (if scientifically feasible) making a strangely cold season this year due to El Nino. Is this actually feasible?

I think it’s really unlikely. Two Earth-based cities at the same latitude and continental position as Quentinsburgh, Freedemia, are Guayaquil, Ecuador and Padang, Indonesia. The RECORD LOW in Guayaquil is 15.8 C - (60 F). The RECORD LOW in Padang is 20 C (68 F). I think freezing temperatures on the Freedemian coast would be meteorologically impossible if OGF is anything like earth, El Niño or not. If you have very high mountains, (like Peru), then freezing temperatures and snow are possible. Equatorial Peru gets snow, but only above 4000 m (13,000 ft).

Okay, I guess that’s fair enough. Do you think perhaps Freedemia should move to have a more fitting climate like some other nations have done recently or do you think I should just further adjust? I have noticed I’ve encountered a lot of issues with a lack of developed neighbors and climate, and while I like where I am now ive wondered if someplace in northern Tarephia or Uletha would be more fitting for a nation this developed.

I don’t think that issues with neighbors or development should be reasons to move. With respect to neighbors, that’s more just a question of luck, in OGF. With respect to neighbors, my own experience with the Ardisphere, so far, has been very disappointing neighbors, but hopefully someone inspired/inspiring/interesting will come along. With respect to development, there are some interesting examples of essentially first-world level of development in untypical locations, e.g. Singapore (right on equator) or Ghana (although not very highly developed, nevertheless surprisingly high development compared to its neighbors). Development differentials between countries can always be explained by different historical experiences and different types of governance.
The climate question is more difficult to answer. Karolia recently moved largely for climate and historical reasons. You don’t have the historical need, since you seem comfortable having been a colony. However, if you don’t like the climate, there is nothing in principal why you couldn’t take on the move. It’s a huge project, however. One thought: you could move the concept “Freedemia” and maybe one or two major cities you’ve put a lot of work on (e.g. Quentinsburgh), but leave the remainder (maybe renaming things in collaboration with your neighbors) instead of moving them.
I’m not sure what to say. I guess my advice would be to try to stick it out and adapt to what you have - but you have some freedom to choose if you’re willing to take on the work of it.

Okay. I was wondering what your ideas were. I think ill stay where I am, it does at least make it so the naturist/nudist culture works with the climate. So far, I’ve been able to adjust well climate wise, even though it’s closed me in a little bit. In general everything has been okay, and I may try to use the climate to emphasize certain aspects, like parks, naturism, and such. I also used it as an environment for rice farming and such too, since its so humid. Im trying to think of other things I should consider to use the climate to my advantage.

Hi Ernest - this is just a thought, and you should discuss with admin - but if you are keen to map things like glaciers in a country with cold climate, there are plenty of places in OGF that have this climate, perhaps more than in the real world. I agree with Luciano and I certainly think Freedemia fits in pretty well where it is, you have worked to explain all those issues of development and climate. It would be a lot of effort to move it, too much. It is good to see countries that do use the climate to their advantage - like the naturism ;)
Luciano - I don’t know if you would want me as a neighbour - but I’ll pm you, I know you are thinking Ardisphere, but perhaps Mahhal too?
