Geolympiad Complex improvements in Quentinsburgh
Posted by Ernestpkirby on 22 January 2016 in English. As most of you (if not all of you) know, Quentinsburgh, Freedemia will be hosting the 2016 Summer Geolympiad/Pancontinental Games.
I had been extremely happy when I had won, knowing the work I’d put into the bid itself; however, there was one thing that kind of bothered me. Out of most of the major cities that I ran against, my venues actually looked worse than my competitors. Looking at the beautiful Olympic Park in Remiville or the venues in Gata, Yury and the skilled mapping of the venues in Old City, Neo Delta, I realized I needed to go back and work on fixing my venues, especially those in the Spectrum Geolympiad Complex.
So in the last few days, I did. I suppose with several venues deleted, improved or moved I’ll have to spend some time fixing the 2016 Summer Geolympiad wiki page. However, I just wanted to show some of the work I’ve done to make the area better.
Here’s an overview of the entire area near the complex:

And this is the complex itself closer up

A close up of the completely redesigned much nicer and more realistic Spectrum Geolympiad Stadium up close, with a view of new parking areas and some artwork of the logo in the front lawn (I worked hard on it! :) )

In addition to all that, I added a mall/hotel complex visible in the first link and second link where one of the older venues used to be to help with holding tourists (mainly the high level ones, an increase in motels and smaller hotels for other tourists is happening as well).
I hope to make all of the complex’s subway stations as good as the one for line 7 (and line 13, I need to edit that)

But I think it’s starting finally to look like a world class venue.

I think you’ve done an awesome job upgrading event-related map elements since you won the 2016 geolympiad bid. They look quite excellent.
Two thoughts:
I would recommend now focusing on some other more general aspects of Quentinsburgh. I think the harbor, especially, needs some kind of re-think - right now you have piers in the open ocean, which is not very plausible… maybe some kind of extension of the coastal islands system you and I worked out together at the Haroldsborough area? That might be simplest - just let your harbor area be the mainland and without changing it, have some coastal islands or narrow peninsulas providing shelter from the open sea.
I’m also a little bit puzzled by the bus guideway you’ve made. It is a good way to show the bus route on the map, maybe… but technically a bus guideway is an out-of-traffic (buses only) lane with special equipment to allow semi-automation of buses, as found at airports or maybe the “orange line” in Los Angeles or the Insurgentes Metrobus in Mexico City. What you’ve drawn looks, routewise, more like an “in-traffic” solution, which under current OSM standards is “invisible” on standard layer - but can be mapped using bus route relations.
Please understand, I’m just giving constructive thoughts - you may focus as you wish. And, as I said, I’m super impressed with all the work you’ve done, and especially have appreciated all your contributions to the community in recent discussions of world history in the diaries and wiki. You’re a great asset to our community!
Happy mapping.

Thanks for the input, Luciano. I think I shall make adjustments accordingly.
Just a couple thoughts so you know where I was originally coming from-
I had originally planned for the BRT to have been separated from traffic; the main thing that ended up happening was that I realized full BRT would have been a really bad solution in part of the area, and came to the conclusion a subway extension would be better. Part of the reason I had it still mapped is because they do have several areas that run in separate dedicated lanes separated by concrete dividers, and some areas had been built with full BRT as the goal originally, but since recent route changes it had sort of been downgraded to a major bus line with dedicated lanes and some BRT characteristics. Now that I do have it mapped on the recently made QUARTA map, it seems less necessary to have it mapped. (I had partially left it for personal reference until getting further along :P )I’m currently deleting it (still looking to make sure I didn’t miss anything) based off of your input. (I had noticed even L.A.’s showed it more as an additional freeway when I looked at it on OSM just yesterday :P )
As for the harbors, I see what you mean and I will attempt to work on fixing them accordingly. :) I honestly am not very knowledgeable about harbors, so I plan on spending some time on OSM to see more realistic ones to get better ideas.
And thanks for the compliments! I’m still working on trying to make the areas look the best I can. I got a lot of my inspiration (for things like the improved mapping of QUARTA lines, fast food restaurants, gas stations, supermarkets, etc) from looking at Gobras City for comparison. But thank you for the input, all constructive criticism helps!

Yeah, the amazing work in Gobras City are mostly the detail-oriented results from wangi and Easky30. I have learned a great deal from both of them, especially when they came in and did some awesome collaborative work in Ardisphere. Someday I need to go back to the neighborhood I started in Gobras City (Ward 14) and fill it out more, based on what I’ve learned since, and to integrate it better with other people’s work.

I deleted the BRT, and I drew some islands and modified the land a bit around harbors, but it seems like I may not be able to see how they came out for a while since it involved coastlines.
