It’s been around a month since I started mapping my country, and I am pleased with some sections and also have a few questions.
My first, and most urgent, question is, why can I only download tiny sections? When I try to download anything onto JOSM larger than 5*5km, it returns an error ‘IO exception… Details (untranslate): read timed out’. It’s really making mapping impossible because it also happens just before uploading when it is updating the map segments.
My second question is, how do I prevent other people editing my country? Another person is adding roads in the corner of my country, near New Denton, which, while on its own is fine, is moving my main motorways around.
My third question is, how do you prevent conflicts occurring in JOSM? This is probably related to the two above problems but still confuses me a lot. Often, it says there are conflicts in the administrative Region ‘Ovaria’ (the old name) which I really don’t understand.
The final (I think…) question is, how do you get public transport routes to appear on the map? In the September challenge, the hyperlink links to a specific route. I have made a public transport legacy route relation, how do I select it in opengeofiction?
Other than that, making steady progress, and would welcome any feedback.

I’m an absolute mess when it comes to setting up JOSM or using relations or just generally advanced technology, but I’ll at least try to solve question nr. 2.
The ‘history’ menu shows that the odd roads were likely drawn by this user. You can send the user a private message regarding the issue. You can’t really prevent other people from editing in your country though.
There’s also an useful JOSM plugin called ‘Revertor’ which can take back unwanted changesets. You can install it in JOSM > Edit > Settings > Plugins.

I will reiterate here, the number one best solution to issues of “small area” restriction in JOSM is to get the “ContinuosDownload plugin”. The recently installed Overpass API also offers some great tools to do partial downloads of large areas, for those willing to invest the time in learning the tool.
Question 2 (other users’ edits)
eklas is right about how to use history in JOSM to find out who’s editing in your territory. It is every user’s responsibility to keep a watch on their own territory, as there is no administrative tool or support for preventing users from editing in specific areas - this is a problem inherent to the OSM software which is the basis for OGF.
Question 3 (conflicts)
I have said many times in various diary entries that the issue with conflicts in JOSM mostly arises because people try to save their working file on their machine between edit sessions. Although the convenience of this is appealing, unless you are a JOSM black belt you will have conflict problems in trying to work this way. I very much recommend downloading a “fresh start” each time you decide to edit something.
That said, what you are describing do not appear to be, strictly speaking, “conflicts,” but rather validation issues. Your country’s boundary relation is broken. You can research about boundary relation maintenance here:

Question 4 (Public transport on map)

In fact, Thilo has allocated space on the new server for joschi81 to implement something like the OSM transport layer, so I gather it’s a work-in-progress. We may have a transport layer in the future.

Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced Preferences, find “socket.timeout.connect” and “socket.timeout.read”, set them both to 120. That’s what I did and I can now download a lot more without timing out!
