Has anyone managed to get selections by name working?
I’ve tried both the geocodeArea and area[name=*] options listed on the OSM wiki’s page on Overpass, but neither seem to work in the OGF implementation.
I understand his problem because i got the same one :) He refers to geocoding, the Overpass instance can’t geocode areas, for example if you want to find all restaurants inside the city boundaries of a named city.
It would also be handy if you want to count all the place=* in your county or do some other country-related statistics, the boundary box (bbox) is useless there…
I tried to supply the relation ID to search in towards the overpass api but failed.
maybe someone should try to set up a nominatim server for that kind of things, i tried to set up a general ogf database server but failed too, only thing that works so far is routing, but only because it doesn’t need a database, but more regarding routing in a different post when I finished everything I’m working on at the moment (anyone here hood with JS an wanting to help out? write me a PM)…

I would have taken out all the nodes and relations in the query part, eases the server a bit and there shouldn’t be any of them with highway=* anyway…
Also, does anyone know how to make that “draw tiny lines as big dots” thing goes away?

Settings > Map > “Don’t display small features as POIs.” (Sometimes they’re useful, sometimes they’re not.)
In the same panel, I also recommend reducing Tiles Opacity to 0.3 or so, which makes the data stand out more from the background.

I use the Wizard to identify places by name and it seems to work okay. Perhaps I’m misunderstanding what you want.
