I just want to run Dunwic’s population estimates past people and see if they agree. I think the city is comparable in density and size to Dusseldorf, if you look at the OSM vs OGF comparison it seems quite reaosnable

I have yet to map all of the outlying towns and suburbs of Dunwic, there will be more and then it will be even more comparable. The population of the city of Dusseldorf (which does covers an area roughly similar to urban Dunwic) is 612,000. Is this a realistic number?
In that case I think it’d probably give the whole country a population of around 1,000,000 which is what I’ve always invisaged. Essentially it could be argued that Myrcia is so small that the whole island is the ‘Dunwic metro area’. It is only 1h40 by train to the farthest city on the island.
Anyway, thoughts welcome as always.

Well, in my opinion, I see Dunwic as a place with a population of maybe 500,000 (with suburbs). Do the Dunwic and Dusseldorf have the same population density in your mind? As I imagine Dunwic, there are no higher buildings, so density wouldn’t be very big. However, I think deviation of +/- 100,000 isn’t so big and important, and it’s better for a country to not be very centralised in one place, so I suggest to not make Dunwic’s population larger than 600,000. For whole Myrcia I agree with a number of 1 million. And as always, great work and greetings!

@ante44 Thanks for the feedback, there are some high rise blocks in Dunwic but it is mostly apartment buildings similar to those in Germany and NL which have quite a high density but don’t rise more than five or six floors. 550,000 might be sensible then, that would mean only just over half the population live in Dunwic.

With a high population density, 612K is definitely a realistic number. Just from looking at the map, I would say about 300K, but my estimate is probably distorted because I like to have my cities large with low population density and a lot of empty space and farmlands.

The current built-up area of Dunwic (with adjacent towns) is twice smaller than Düsseldorf’s one (roughly 44 sq.km against 88 sq.km as I checked in JOSM), so I give 300.000 for Dunwic area.
The city of Dunwic in its administrative limits is roughly 18 sq.km, so the number of population in this core is about 130.000 inhabitants.
If you want more people for Dunwic area increase the population density or built-up area.
If speaking generally I like 600.000 for Dunwic and slightly more than 1 million for Myrcia - it looks realistic.

Dunwic looks closer to 300,000 but especially with that urban boundary road if you make a history of that road being used to keep th city small you can increase density or better yet you could make high density suburbs in Mycria similar in size to Mortalaz, Madrid, or Husby, Sweden or Kista,Sweden.
