Dunwic Flyhthæfen International

Posted by Myrcia on 27 July 2016 in English.

Hello again everyone. I really appreciated the feedback I got on my last post about my central railway station and now I have redesigned my airport and need some input again. I know a lot less about airport design than I do about railway stations.

Dunwic Flyhthæfen International

Before today Myrcia had a huge airport which I built thinking it would be a regional hub but, realistically, I think it was over optimistic and so I decided to start over again. You can see here the difference between the two airports:

I hope this new airport is a more realistic size. I’ve also improved the transport links, simplified the motorways and re-routed some of the railways.

Let me know what you think

I cannot say much, for I do not know much about airport design either, but I think it looks good. Around the size of Birmingham International. The detailing at the terminals are very nice-I like it!

@Yuanis That’s great! I was hoping for about Birmingham International / London Stansted size so I’m really glad you said that.

I love the amount of detail you have put into it! That must have been a lot of work, but the result is really nice. The size is good, as far as I can see.

I think the runway should be rotated at least 90 degrees parallel to the coast to face the likely prevailing wind. A quick survey of commercial airports immediately next to the coast (Rome, Barcelona, Doha, Palermo, Hong Kong) shows that all main runways are built parallel to the shore and not at right-angles to it. Dunwic would almost certainly have a north-east - south-west prevailing wind due to location of hills and the river. Depending on season, pilots and autopilots would need some skill to counter the sudden updraft or downdraft as the aircraft hits the warmer/cooler air over land just as they are preparing to touch down or climbing out with a full loads. In fact at such low altitude this could be very dangerous. I strongly discourage a container park, presumably featuring cranes, so close to the flight path too.

There are also some very tight bends in the railways here. In fact you could rotate the entire complex and have a single railway line running through the airport station, also saving on expensive motorway tunnels.

Taxiway B2 could be rethought. An aircraft exiting here would end up using half the runway, over a mile, to taxi back having turned round, effectively blocking the airport for several minutes. In addition, a turning loop should be provided at the western end for aircraft requiring the entire runway length (which will not be many, but you could in theory have a giant cargo flight in low pressure). Don’t forget to add a fuel depot to the airport as well with this level of detail.
