I’ve been on OGF for about two or three months now. I got my own country about a month and a half ago, and have been building there since. I’ve been looking at what i have built and been thinking to myself “Am I doing this right?” I’ve also been looking at the structure of real-world countries, and been trying to mimic them, but it doesn’t feel “right”. It feels like i’m doing something wrong… Maybe you guys can help. My Country is Caspilinia. Yokimpia needs some work done on it, and there is a village “Fronteira” where the three countries border to the mid-west near a mountain. I’ve been using Potlatch as my editing tool.

To be honest, I think you just need practice and lots and lots of patience. The most important question right now (for me at least) would be, what type of country/city do you want your places to look like? You mention that you looked at real world examples, which a very good way, but cities in the real world have great differences depending on history, wealth, population, climate etc. So if you could give us some insight into what your “vision” for your country is, we could do a much better job with helping you to find out what you could do to make your cities look more realistic :)

I think Leowezy’s question is really good. What kind of place do you want to build?
If you haven’t seen the Making Realistic Cities tutorial, be sure to check it out. Part of the tutorial talks about how helpful it can be (especially for a beginner) to adopt a real city for inspiration and use it as a model. As you gain more experience and talent, it becomes easier to get creative and innovative and dream up new things that may have no parallel on Earth, but still feel somehow realistic.
