Tircambry is shrinking!

Posted by Pawl on 12 March 2017 in English.

Over the last few months I have come to the conclusion that Tircambry (278K sq.km.) is probably bigger than I really want or feel at home with, so after consulting with admins I have decided to give up over half the territory and concentrate everything into a smaller area. The surrendered territory will become UL148.

The shrunken Tircambry will have a land area of c.127,000 sq.km. - a bit smaller than England or Greece. All the existing provinces and cantrefs (counties) will be bunched up into this space, so the political structure and history will not change. This will be the new Tircambry (in red):

Tircambry new border

I will move the island of Ynyspur so that it remains in Tircambry, and adjust the coastline a bit, leaving a reasonable-sized coast for UL148.

Lots to do … so I had better get started.

Happy mapping!

Congrats to Pawl on making this decision. And I’m sure there are other mappers out there who could benefit from some shrinkage as well…

So if anyone else is interested in the possibility of downsizing, please know that the admin team is happy to help. Feel free to contact us anytime.

Happy mapping!

Hmm. There is a bit of Karolia I would happily cede to Ispelia to make the western border neater, or even to a whole new territory.

Thanks, Sarepava. You’re welcome to send a sketch of what you have in mind. It’s nice to have more territory options for new users to choose from, so we would definitely appreciate that kind of downsizing.

At the same time, the people I’m really trying to reach out to are the ones who could benefit from more substantial reductions, like chopping off 50% or 75% or even 90% of their territory.

I’d invite interested territory owners to do a quick calculation: (1) estimate how many km² they feel they have mapped to their own personal satisfaction (however they choose to interpret that); (2) divide by the number of years they have been mapping here, thus calculating a rate of km²/year; and finally (3) take their total land area in km² and divide by the km²/year rate, to give the estimated number of years it would take to fully map their territory.

Of course this is a very quick and dirty guesstimate, a back-of-the-napkin sort of thing that can probably be adjusted in different ways to account for various factors, may not be entirely relevant to everyone, terms and conditions may apply, etc… but still…

I would be down for this if I didn’t have a mental investment in almost every corner of Pretany. That and don’t want another inactive neighbor that was once a part of Pretany. I learned my lesson after the PFS that turned out to be a dud.

Well it should only take 2 years for me to do my country

@bhj867 — This may or may not be relevant to your situation, but for anyone else reading this: if there’s ‘mental investment’ in the form of actual mapping in different corners of the territory, in most cases these cities and/or regions can be moved and consolidated within the part the owner wishes to keep. And I wouldn’t recommend that anyone hold onto territories for fear of having inactive neighbors — such neighbors may not be ideal, but some of our most talented mappers border inactive territories and that doesn’t prevent them from creating amazing work.

@ilikemaps — If you’ve been here 4 months and you calculate 2 years total, then your country would already be 1/6 complete so far, an area some 60 by 60 km in size. The only way that could be right is if you’re counting the featureless “Northern National Park” and “Kalmburg Forests” as being ‘done’… and even then, the resulting estimate would be valid only if you intend to fill the remaining 5/6 of Auleus with plain forests at the same proportion. Assuming you don’t intend to do so, it looks like you have maybe 100 km² of detail around Carran/Ferron, plus maybe 100 km² elsewhere, which would give you 200 km² out of 20,000 km², so perhaps a 30-year project… maybe 10 or 20 if you assume that rural lands will be mapped faster than the urban areas you’ve focused on so far. But that’s assuming you really are satisfied with areas like Carran, which although definitely promising, still seems like there’s a lot more that could be added.

I think it would probably take a decade until I am completely satisfied with Hoppon, but with Lallemand, If I focused and had only done all my mapping I have done so far in Lallemand I would have been finished with all the roads, and natural features already. I think If I focus this summer ill be able to map for multiple hours everyday and the nation of Lallemand would be completed by mid-2018. But that is unlikely to happen, maybe if I also switch to JOSM from iD.

I am wracking my brain right now for a way to break off a chunk of Pretany in a way that would not require a massive overhaul of my wiki, and the geographic maps that I don’t have save files to. I will think on it.

Comment from bhj867 on 13 March 2017 at 22:52

I have decided against it at the moment. I have a complicated tribal history of Pretany that would require me to remake third party territory/history maps, and rearrange the wiki in a way that would be complicated and time consuming. More time than I have at the moment. The only way I would be able to do it, is if I could impose my history on that territories historical timeline. Meaning the country would have to have “Broken off” and formed recently, which would severely limit the new users historical options, and is against the rules. So I don’t think Pretany would be able to apply to this movement. I for some strange reason though find it tempting to do it, change the maps and the wiki and everything out of sheer boredom and a need for a change. I had an idea to break off the lands directly around INARA and the PRETANIC LAKE into several small countries all surrounding the lake, but I don’t know how the new members would feel about their countries being completely surrounded by the deepest parts of Pretany. That would be very difficult for them to create a history there.

Below is a very rudimentary version of what I was proposing in my head. Like This

In this case I’d say it’s probably not worth the hassle. The lands surrounding the lake represent only a small fraction of Pretany’s total land area, so they wouldn’t reduce the size of your mapping project by that much. It can be worth investing considerable time and energy to change stuff around if you can benefit by emerging from it with a significantly smaller country, but it doesn’t seem like this plan would benefit you in that way.
