How to Edit with JOSM?

Posted by Saint Piran on 4 November 2014 in English.

I cannot get JOSM to talk with OGF at all.

I’ve spent ages trying to learn how to do this, but no joy.

I get messages about ‘Remote Control’ that I don’t understand when I try to get them working together.

What do I need to do to be able to get JOSM editing - non-technical explanation, please.

As I’ve been threatened with my territories getting removed if I don’t get ‘serious mapping’ done, this is of paramount importance… especially as I’ve dedicated a year’s-worth of my little spare-time to this project already (almost all of which is in the compilation of my many-tens-of-thousands-word-long side-work: “The Encyclopaedia Brythonnica”, and in study of the OSM-Wiki ~ trying to find-out how to do this ‘serious mapping’!). Due to that ultimatum hanging-over my head, I’ve been forced to “come out” as a registered sufferer of a physical disability that has, does and always will seriously reduce my speed & abilities in manual-tasks (such as using the PC-interface to do my ‘serious mapping’ here), for example: I’m reduced to ‘mousing’ every communication ~ making my current ‘typing speed little more than 15-20 w.p.m. at very best; an effort I’m not able to sustain over much more than about 20 minutes per session, as even this wracks me with activity-ending neuralgia.

I HAVE previously advertised here for assistance with this ‘serious mapping’, but no-one’s been interested so far. I hope that someone might now come forward and offer their help; aside from my initial query about the JOSM.

I don’t wish to be ‘kicked-out’ of here simply because I’m physically limited, but unless I can find a willing ‘accomplice’, that looks like it could be likely, whether that be right, wrong, justifiable or fair!

I guess if you don’t hear from or see me/Brythonn again ~ I’ll have failed to entice anyone to help me with those ‘serious mapping’ things!!!

Disappeared Islands/Provinces

Posted by Saint Piran on 31 October 2014 in English.

Oi!

Where the heck are my outer Islands/Provinces - West & Southwest of Brythonn?

I checked-in today to discover my two outermost Island groupings; BOTH OF WHICH HAVE & SHOULD CONTINUE TO EXIST IN A NARRATIVE BELONGING TO AN ONLINE GROUP OF PEOPLE OUTSIDE OPENGEOFICTION; have simply disappeared!!!

Those islands are an integral part of a Project based upon this MAP, much in the same way that ‘ordinary’ OSM is integral to say, Wheelmap.org and others. Parts of my (or anyone else’s) works on OPENGEOFICTION should not be open to being ‘abused’ like this. Presumably the party responsible would now like to rewrite the ±200,000 word narrative we’ve put together involving those islands ~ in light of their sudden disappearance? That’s the workload I’ve now to face in order to ‘make good’ all the ramifications of my islands’ disappearences.

NOT HAPPY guys.

I don't really know what I'm doing!

Posted by Saint Piran on 11 September 2014 in English.

I’m here because I have a ‘vision’ that I wish to realise, but I’m finding it very hard to translate that within my head graphically onto the map, and in words/pictures into the Wiki!

I’m very slowly learning ‘from scratch’, but beyond adding some bits of rivers, a large lake, some administrative boundaries, a few islands & coastal edits, plus placing a few-dozen cities/country-names (many which seem now to be ‘lost’) ~ I’ve not achieved anything like what I’ve wanted!

What, how, from whom may I get assistance?

The Brythonnic Imperium

Posted by Saint Piran on 29 July 2014 in English.

The Brythonnic Imperium was created simply to provide a basic map showing settlements whose names are being used in a game elsewhere on the web. As such, the map is perfectly adequate for purpose. However, compared with other ‘cartographers’ efforts here, it’s obvious that my own map-making skills are sadly quite inadequate to the task of adding ‘reasonable’ data to it - other than the very most basic settlement points!

I would therefore like to invite two or three other persons to assist me realise my vision of the ‘State of Brythonn’ & ‘The Europan Polity’ ~ being the two fundamental partners involved in ‘The Brythonnic Imperium’.

Those interested should not mind being directed from quite extensive literature that already exists about many geographic locales in ‘Brythonn’ [short form], and also through further conversation with myself. Good grasp of English will be needed, as some of my/text/prose can be rather dense! LOL.

In Brythonn [and thus presumably all-over this planet the folk of Brythonn name “Opengeo” (so named for the Spacefaring-Ark which transported their antecedents from Earth)] the native fauna & flora are descended from three separate ‘birth of life events’ that occurred virtually coterminously geologically speaking, over two billion local years ago. So Brythonnic folk face a daily battle with alien lifeforms, both domesticated and wild… and there’ll be every opportunity for those accepted to help me build Brythonn ~ to create new fauna & flora as well, marrying it to the landscape they’ll be helping me construct! There will also be much free rein upon where to emplace settlements of all sizes too… I’ve only placed 40 or so, so far - and I have a ‘Gazetter of Brythonnic Place-Names’ that holds over 3200 more (which total doesn’t include place-names from within the Europan Polity, wherefrom I have about another thousand to add!).

At the new server

General impression ~ Description sounds brilliant, tx Thilo.

Should make things easier to use for me to use (I think/hope).

Some initial queries:-

1]. Almost all of the planet is currently shown ‘under water’ in the VIEW screen. There are just a few white ‘islands’ showing… Is this something that we - users - have to ‘fix’ ourselves, and if so, how do we do this?

2]. My offshore islands: Their outlines have all disappeared, leaving just their inter-state boundaries sitting in the ocean. How to ‘fix’, please?

3]. Text display size: My vision is imperfect and I find that the names for things on the map are a little too small for me to be able to see clearly. How can they be magnified say, 20-25%?

4]. I NEED to be able to see the settlement nodes/names at most map-representation magnifications, but the ‘smaller settlements’ all disappear as I zoom-out. How may I prevent this, as this is a very important factor for me? (Without having to mark them all up as ‘cities’!)

5]. I am SERIOUSLY struggling to think of a way to join my settlements with highways, etc. ~ because at the ‘Editing Magnifications’ I cannot tell where &/or in what exact direction the ‘next settlements lie. Is there a ‘trick’ to this, or some method of (say) just joining the settlement nodes with straight lines (that may later be individually edited)?

6]. I need to show physical geographic features like hills, mountains, moors, valleys, vales, etc. Please can you advise where I might find facilities to suit (this, I appreciate is simply a matter of my severe inexperience!).

7]. I’m entirely unsure about ‘LAYERS’ and their purposes/uses & best practice ~ please could you advise?
