Where shall I go next?

I’ve got 2 issues on my mind right now:

I’m stuck on what to do for Decton’s town centre. There is a significant amount left to be completed but I’ve got no ideas on what to put in it. I’m thinking of turning Decton’s Centre temporarily into a ‘blue zone’, which anyone can edit. This way I can finish it quicker.

Rules I propose will be:

  1. You can only make buildings-do not alter existing structures.
  2. Minor edits to streets are fine, but overall I have the last say. Please do not delete anything without consulting me first.
  3. Try to blend in with my/everyone else’s style.
  4. Keep in mind the context, which is based in England.

Meanwhile, I need to do something else. What do you think I should do? Here is my to do list so far:

  1. Fix Ellmouth. It looks a total mess. Low priority, as this will require a lot of time.
  2. Finish my Historical Decton project (see my previous diary entry) Medium urgency, as I need to green up the area there.
  3. Do something with the landscape (Fix and add rivers, make the rest of Glaster green) Medium urgency, as my country’s infrastructure depends on this. It is currently happening at a very slow pace.
  4. Fix the port around Reyston, which hasn’t been changed much since I came. Low urgency, can be done at any time without consequence.
  5. Reduce and alter the courses of my motorways. High urgency, as this alters my country in its entirety. Currently not happening
  6. Add in and fix existing minor country roads. Urgency is low, as that would probably come after the ‘greening’
  7. Add details to other settlements (My current choices are either Wyndham, Plowford or Tibrin) Urgency: High. I want to do this. Sort of. I feel guilty if I start another project before I’ve finished my current one. In fact, the only large settlement that is currently wholly complete is Stewhampton.
Location: Praco, Dharwen, Wugearth, Wysthyr

I vote for landscape. I have been taking a “landscape first” approach with Ardisphere - which doesn’t mean I don’t map other things (indeed, I frequently map other things, these days, mostly small town nuclei)- but it means I always go into the editor with the intention and plan to work on landscape. Really, it’s quite a huge undertaking, but it feels like the “right” order - at least for me.

Watercourses and hills perhaps? It will make a lot of other things fall into place.

I might be interested in helping you fill out Decton - I live in a typical English city, so no shortage of inspiration.

Well I guess I’ll go with the landscape for now. A question-which tags shall I use? From what I’ve seen in places like Lantania and Neberly the only way to do it is landuse=forest. Should I use that or something else.

@Sarepava You are very welcome to edit Decton!

Actually I’m not sure just tagging a bunch of forests is the best approach - since mountains are not the same as forests, clearly. I like to recommend approaching landscape by working detailed water systems first, or topo if that’s your thing - but topo is really hard because you have to do it offline - there’s no tagging system for topo in OSM. Some users have done some amazing topo work though: e.g Latania.

I second Luciano’s advice. If you place hilly areas first (just add some peak symbols) and then work out how the rivers will flow to the sea from there. No need for great mountain ranges, just some elevation to create rivers and valleys.

So what tags should be useful for such an operation? I’ve drafted out the basics of Glaster. Up north its steep hills and forests, south and central Glaster is low hills, and west Glaster is mostly hills and scrubland.

I’ve made some buildings in Decton, and also a football stadium further out. Let me know if it’s what you are after.

@Sarepava I like what you’ve done! Feel free to add more if you wish.
