Admins will begin deleting images without copyright info
Posted by admin on 31 March 2015 in English.Don’t put Opengeofiction at risk of a lawsuit. Add copyright info to your wiki images. Even if the actual risk of getting sued might be rather low, it would threaten the very existence of OGF if it happened.
Just a reminder: all images uploaded to the wiki must include information showing that you have permission to use them, including a link to the original image (where relevant). This applies to photographs and artwork, including original artwork.
For examples, see our new expanded image use guide in the wiki.
In a few days, the admin team will begin deleting all images lacking this information. Please make our job easy by adding this information to your images so that we don’t have to delete them.
If you can’t find copyright info for your images, please replace them with images that are freely usable. They’re not hard to find. For details see the image use guide.

I see the copyright info should be added to the comments on the image. Is it possible to edit these comments afterwards, to add this copyright info, is it the summary? I’ve been searching for it, but don’t see how.

Just open the image and click “Edit”. Then you can edit the text which is shown below picture :)

I have worked myself in to a problem with images. I used images that were available for non-commercial use, often as backgrounds, and sometimes used parts of multiple images which I altered as needed. I was careful to pick usable images, but did not keep track or reference the sources.
As a temporary work around, can I load new versions of the images that are severely degraded?
For example, this image contains original work (the plane) with a part of an image, most likely from Flickr, that was available for use.
Could I uploaded this degraded image
as a place holder until I can render my own clouds and load a new version?
If it’s best to simply remove images in their entirety, I can remove anything that’s even slightly questionable and create new versions and include documentation.

Thilo may need to be stricter than this (if so, I’m sure he will reply) but for now here’s my suggestion: In this case, since we’re talking about a mix of background material and you are certain that it was all 100% copyright free, I’d just say something like: “Aircraft is fully original artwork; background image compiled entirely from copyright-free sources.”

I think I took care of all of my images. Does this apply to names of facilities in OGF? If there were say, a real ‘Salsa Brewing Company” would there be an issue?

I guess that depends on how litigious that Salsa Brewing Company would be. As a rule of thumb, you should probably handle it the same way as if you where the author of a novel wherein you mention a company with said name. As far as I’m aware, authors don’t get sued very often about something like this, probably because there’s not that much profit to expect, and the legal case is harder to make than for a simple image copyright violation, which is nearly automatable.

If one takes a “free” photo from a namely known person - p.e. from wikipedia - to illustrate here a biography about an violent and bad person, then the person can claim her personality rights.
But if here someone describes a company in neutral manner for a neutral business (like a brewery), I think tat is o.k. So my greatest brewery is “San Miguel” as in real Spain. But what is San Miguel for a name? An all-day-name without any artificant importance.

I do have questions about the usage and copyright information regarding Public domain and Creative Commons photos. Can this apply to “free” photos of people from 1900 and earlier, should these new rules apply to them? How can we avoid using “free” photos (especially the photos from 1900 or earlier) that are prone to violate their (or their families’) personality rights?
I know the United States do have copyright laws and after 70 years, content falls into the public domain. What about other real life country’s copyright laws too?
I would like to say that the best thing users can do to do is to upload your own works, 100% made by the user only, if anyone wish to do so, and from now on, please provide copyright information in all of your uploaded images. Doing so can prevent OGF from being sued.
If the OGF project gets sued, then we have a serious problem.

@ Belphania Project = There are two aspects. The one is the “free” photo to illustrate something. This is harmless. The other aspect is, to take this “free” photo of a namely known person, to illustrate a bad fictional person. Would you like this, if someone gets your photo?
So the intention, to give a photo for free use is most, that the photo is good or the person (most woman) is pretty. But you can be sure, that the intention is not, that this photo then describes a person, nobody would like.
So what is to do? Own photo means not only, that you made yourself the photo. It means too, that the person on the photo gives the o.k., that she is the illustration of an dictator or murder or such things. So it is not easy, to illustrate a bad person in the present with a photo. If there is no photo, you can make a scetch. If not self, ask someone you know, to make it for you.
And in the past? I dont know the laws in the USA. But I think, 100 years can be enought.

I take a look in files I ever upload in OGF. So much logos and infoboxes about football clubs and bus companies - all of them I made in MS Paint or Corel Draw. Some inspiration, its true, like real Campomaiorense (Portugal) to Sporting (Serie B/ Brasonia) and my vectorized version of Nacional de Manaus (Brasil) to Nacional (Serie A/Brasonia). I uploaded only three photos, all of them I take these pictures last time I was in Rio de Janeiro.

@BMSOUZA - The Laranjeiras and Sede_clube images both say “Photo by Bruno Moreira,” so they are fine. For the infobox (and any other drawings that are 100% original) just add a note saying “Artwork by Bruno Moreira.”
