World political maps

Posted by deltanz on 7 October 2015 in English (English)

Hello, guys, this is actually my first entry here, so I'd like to start by saying that I'm really having a great time in this community! Being part of this world that you're collectively building is an amazing experience, so thank you to everyone who's spending a part of their days drawing and editing awesome maps!

Now, more specifically, one of the most difficult parts of understanding OGF to me getting to know people who are members of the community and their respective countries. I love looking around and discovering new places, but since the world is so big and some areas are not clearly and fully edited, I think it would help a lot if we had a nice political map of the world. I myself tried to do one recently, but I'm not as good with editing software as other people here, so the result was terrible. I end up looking at the OGF:Territories, which, don't get me wrong, it's a great source, and of course, the wiki as a whole helps a lot. But still, sometimes I'm reading about a country and I have no idea where it is.

Maybe we already have a map like that, I just don't know about it. And I imagine it is no easy task, since doing that map would require time and constant updating, but it would be great to see the world like in this amazing map of Uletha I posted below, I really like it, congrats to the person who did it! So let me know your thoughts! :)

Hi deltanz! Nice to hear that you like being part of OGF. For me it's the same. The only thing I regret about it is that I don't have more time for it. But as you said, it's always a pleasure to discover new, nicely mapped things or interesting wiki articles.

As for the political map: I think we definetly should have one! But constant update work for the map needs a clear routine, not only for colouring countries, but also for importing updated continental and country outlines. I'm not the right one to propose a solution here, as I'm not too deep into exporting/editing map data offline (outside JOSM). But maybe the experts here have a good idea (those who already did comparable things).

By the way: Looking at the map I have the feeling that we really need better names for the oceans. I will start a new diary entry for this.

Best regards joschi81

You know, it would also be nice to have some historical maps, both from the imperial era with all the colonies clearly colored in, and from medieval times with castles and trees and 'here be dragons' or 'Terra incognita' by the missing or guessed bits of coastline.

The map of Uletha was made by user Kalh79 and I agree it is really great. The only suggestion I'd made for future political maps would be to use a different projection, maybe Eckert IV like the old territories map, just to provide a new perspective on our world. :-)

I'd love to see more maps like this too- although I just realized how few developed neighbors Freedemia has in Tarephia. Hm.

I'd also love to see more maps like this. I have tried to do it myself but have struggled to extract a map with all the correct borders and coastlines (and nothing but borders and coastlines).
