Google docs for country data

Posted by deltanz on 14 October 2015 in English (English)

Hello, guys, I was thinking about an easy and quick way to share information about our countries. I like the wiki, but sometimes I need too many tabs to get all the information I need. And also sometimes I need additional information that is not so easy to find, like who is the owner of a country and how many countries a user has, for example. So I decided to create a google docs spreadsheet and share it you guys.

I put on some info on the users, the countries and their main characteristics, so if anyone need a more detailed summary of a territory, it's there. We can edit with many other columns if we wish, I just entered some info on wars that I don't know how relevant they'll be, it's just a test.

The information for Neo Delta is there as a model.

Anyway, it was an idea, it can be transferred to the wiki at any time. Here is the link:

Feel free to suggest anything! Thanks!

Não sei se o pessoal aqui vai aderir, embora eu ache muito interessante. Vou me organizar e em breve adicionarei informações sobre meus países nessa planilha. Abração! Bruno Moreira

I dont know if all the other users will like, but I think it is very interesting. Soon, I will include information about my countries too. Regards! Bruno Moreira

This could be really useful if it is filled in. Thanks deltanz! Most useful function looks likely to allow identify territory owners (which I have been finding hard from just the map and wiki). And if it could be linked to the territory map or that page wiki, maybe even more useful.

Have filled in for Ūdzđąnąrąt.

The definitive "who owns what country" information is here, which is maintained by the admins. The columns can be sorted by user if you want to see how many countries a particular user has.

But bringing as much info as possible together in a single place is a good idea. I've added a line for Tircambry.

I do not think, that it is helpfull, to store information at too many places - and I do not want to appear in the google-land. And it is not done, to create such a list - this list must be served and updated.

If someone really needs such a list - why do not create such a list in the normal OGF-Wiki?

And Pawl is right = If someone will know the owner of a land, there is the overlook-map.

I agree in principle with @histor on this. No reason to put this information elsewhere when it is easier to place the information in a wiki page - that is what the OGF: namespace is for. Users should feel free to create pages of information they think is useful, which I think this is.

I agree with Luciano and Histor that the OGF wiki would be the best place for this information. Google docs is more user friendly, easier to fill in, easier to edit, etc — maybe that's the motivation here?

Yeah, I was trying to be more practical with a table easy to edit, but we can surely move the table to the wiki, although I wouldn't be the best person to do that, I'm not really familiar with editing large tables in the wiki. My point was also that we could always insert more things into the table as soon as we wished. But I agree with you guys!

I also agree with Luciano and Histor that the OpenGeofiction Wiki is the best place to add new information. I do not think that Google Docs would be helpful but just a thought.

Perhaps best approach is to do this "Luciano style"? Add properties to the country relation specifying these useful bits of information, there is then a script which extracts that from the database and can be used to update the table on the Wiki.

@wangi - this could be done. Certainly I am a fan of recording information in the actual OGF map database, and have done so extensively. However, we will still need a wiki table to present the information, so for now I would say let's work to refine what kind of information we want in the table.

Another thought - I did some experiments with "popup" wiki content on the OGF overview map. You can see the result if you click on my territory Ardisphere on the current overview. This might be a great place and way to embed other information about owners and countries such as is found in deltanz's proposed table. Users would be able to create their own "popup" templates and these could be embedded in the overview map (in fact, my script that I use to update the overview map already looks for tags ogf:popup-title and ogf:popup-text).

You can examine the wiki source for the Ardisphere popup here.
