Opening a community mapping area!

Posted by forkymapper on 30 May 2020 in English (English)

Hey everyone!

I am opening a part of my territory where everyone is free to add stuff! This is for a couple of reasons: 1. I'm feeling generous, and need inspiration for some of my own work. 2. I have noticed that a lot of free mapping areas are becoming quite full, with not much freedom to add stuff.

Before you go and start adding stuff, I want to enforce some conditions. Don't worry, most of them wont restrict you too much!

  1. DO NOT edit outside the island. If found doing so, all work will be removed. It is possible that editing outside of the allotted area will result in a temporary ban from admin.
  2. Try and keep the style of mapping rural. There will be one large city, which is the only one. I will decide where it lies.
  3. Try and keep most mapping close to the coast, as seen with most islands. There can be some roads that go through the mountains of the island.
  4. Most of the city/town/village names will be a mix of Thai and Vietnamese. So try and keep your names like these! You can use my city names as a reference.

Let me know if you have questions! Here is where you can get started! I'm excited to see what you come up with!

Best wishes and happy mapping,

forky

I would, however I'm quite busy with other mapping projects at the moment. Best of luck with your territory!

Don't worry Lithium, this isn't required. I'll be hosting this for a while, so when you can, feel free to add! :)

Mike, this is an island vs an entire territory. They are a little different. Also, the situation here is quite different then the user diary you link, in my opinion.

Of course, admin can have the final say on this. I'm not speaking as the voice of law here.

Lithium, wangi (unless he’s hypocritical) said not the open up my territory even for collaborative. And I don’t think size matters.

Everything in the diaries are the same thing. I even agreed to have the option for a collaboration.

Erm, yes size can matter, that's the only difference from the diaries. However, I think It's the concept itself about opening a territory "to general, or collaborative, mapping by other users."

I'll share any concerns I have with forkymapper.

Mike - in your quoting you missed "you"; this is all very subjective to the users mapping experience, the amount of territory etc. There is not one single answer.

Thanks for sharing your concerns everyone. I'll leave it up to the administration team to decide whether this is appropriate or not. If, not, I will remove this post.

I would say, don't be discouraged. I will say if you want the most serious investment try to have more of your territory mapped, as leaving an island open with only a location means that their will always be conflicting ideals and mappers generally avoid free open collaborative spaces that are ultimately under the control of one person. If you have decent mapping skills and the map has more hints and more restrictions, mappers could ultimately contact you to help out with your personal project, but generally most folks are busy focusing on their territories, and requests along this line don't usually get too many folks interested until their's more on the map that they can help along.
