Tarott - Slow progress, mapper's challenges and Pancontinental Games (Geolympiad) 2008
Posted by joschi81 on 22 September 2016 in English.Inspired by Luciano’s Mapper’s Challenge #6 - September, 2016 - GETTING AROUND, I started creating the metro line (U-Bahn) relations for the city of Tarott. Well… I started, at least.
Mapping since more than two weeks now, up to a few hours almost every day, I only managed to finish the first part of U1 (the oldest metro line of Tarott, regarding the inner city section, and part of the small-profile network, details here). So I’m presenting an “intermediate” result to you now. Here’s how far I got:

Why did I only get this far? The explanation is quite simple: Tarott, as some of you know, was imported from a “non-GIS” vector file right after the birth of OGF, a vector file that had been drawn only for graphical purposes in Adobe Illustrator. You can still see the annoying results in the largest part of Tarott. Along with drawing the metro line details, I decided to add the details (almost eveything important except residential buiildings) within the surrounding areas. This - I must admit - takes much longer than I thought. (Actually, it’s a pity that I had only drawn Tarott outside OGF in this “unprofessional” way since 2010 before OGF started, now I have to do all the work once again…)
But have a look at the result, compare the areas next to the mentioned part of the metro line to other regions and you see where I’m heading (at the speed of a tired snail). And see the Hattneypark details I added today instead of focusing on a continued U1 relation. :)
Oh, and there’s one more important thing that I wanted to show (even though unfinished as well). Tarott hosted the Pancontinental Games in 2008 (Geolympiad, in OGF language, but I refuse to use this name due to an obvious real world reference). And here’s the incomplete Tarott 2008 Summer Pancontinental Games venues list. Enjoy browsing the venue locations! It’s written as a “proposal”, as if there would be a competition. But I think everyone agrees that it’s OK to add Tarott for the 2008 Games as a fact to OGF world history?!

@Luciano: And of course, names are very important to me, as you can see within the already detailed sections of Tarott. So, yes, I was inspired by your Mapper’s challenge #5 as well.

Once again, its great to see your approach to developing such a well mapped and believable country. We know how much time it takes to get things to look realistic, but it really makes a difference.
I think the more we do, the more we see that having a coherent plan to start with can save a lot of work.
I think Tarott must have been the hosts for 2008 games - you can consider this a vote for it anyway, if that’s needed. In terms of the name, I agree - as you say. The problem is that ‘Pancontinental Games’ isn’t very catchy. Perhaps there was a place ‘Geolympia’ (in the country where the ‘Greek’ culture originated, as yet unmapped) where games like this originated? Though I don’t find ‘Geolympics’ very catchy either, and it has such an obvious real world reference it takes you out of OGF. Myrcia’s [Isle & City Games]http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/Isle_%26_City_Games) I really like, because it has some of the elements of real world sporting events, while being clearly part of an organic development, from inside the OGF world.

On the question of the Games, I don’t care which name is used, whether it’s Pancontinental or Geolympiad or something else (in the US, “Olympiad” is used in various contexts such as Math Olympiads, Science Olympiads, etc, so for me “Geolympiad” is fine) but in any case there should be consensus and consistency. (“Quadrennial Games?”)
As for awarding the games, I like how there was a competition for the 2016 games. Ideally I’d like to see competitions every few months, first for the 2012 games, then for the 2008 games, then for the 2004 games, etc., moving slowly back in time. And I’d like to see voting based not only on the proposal, but on how well mapped the city is.

RE isleño’s suggestions about Pancontinental Games, I completely agree - especially about awarding the various games. I also agree with the original point that we have a bit of a naming issue, but… I don’t think it’s that important. “Pancontinental” annoys me because it’s etymologically weak… the best way to do it would be to come up with an alternate history where there was some ancient “Olympus” and then work forward from that, to a good name.
RE the excellent mapping work at Tarott - from when I first came to OGF, Tarott has inspired me, and been one of my favorite cities. I am flattered to see the way joschi81 mentions and responds to my mapper’s challenges. I think he’s doing better with my recent challenges than I am.

RE the name, the problem - if there is one - neither ‘Pancontinental’ or ‘Geolympiad’ are very catchy. ‘Pancontinental’ - much too long (and makes me think of pans rather than sports). Plus, is it only continents, or is it islands as well? ‘Geolympiad’ - clumsy - makes me think of an olympiad, a specific real world term (whatever its meaning), but with an obvious reference to ‘OGF’ tacked on. Too long as well. Even if ‘Geolympus’? Geolympia’? existed in OGF… Might it be simpler just to call them the ‘World Games’ or ‘The Games’. @ isleño like you say, it doesn’t matter which name is used if it is consistent. But the nature of these names probably won’t lead to that.
Re previous games - I agree voting based not only on the proposal, but on how well mapped the city is. Are there enough well mapped places in the world for this to happen? - there are still not many cities like Tarott. Perhaps it would be better to wait, develop other championships, e.g. world athletics, which would require the same stadia … I’m asking this because I’m not sure.

Thanks for your comments! I appreciate that you consider Tarott an already well mapped city, although there’s much work left for bringing the mapped street layout and landuses to OGF standard.
And for the name of Geolympiad/Pancontinental Games: I agree that both names aren’t really a “good final solution”. By the way: There is the short name of “Paco” oder Pako” for the Pancontinental Games - but I’m not really satisfied. So we have to way for an alternative Greece in OGF and built upon the names of historical places there. :)
