Infowindow?

Posted by lars on 29 August 2017 in English (English)

Hello everyone,

Is there any possibility to make Infowindows on the map, like on Google maps. It would be really cool to give more informations about the locations and espacially to link the Landmarks or buildings directly to Infos or the Wiki. I know its just a Idea but are there more users out there, which are thinking that woud be an idea for the futur of OGF?

happy mapping, Lars

It's possible in two ways. It could indeed be done in a multimap, but those are mostly used for specific categories (the states in your country, the locations of a specific business in a city). This also means it has to be added to a wiki page first, and then you have to search the specific map.

You can also add more info to nodes, ways and relations on the map by adding more tags to them, I do this all the time. For instance, you can add opening hours, codes, the address, the website and even the wiki page and all kinds of other (selfmade) tags for local hotspots like I did here, but you can also add tags to entire cities or countries.

To see these tags in the map, of course you can just use the search bar for the name of whatever you're looking for, but you can also right click the map on the place and click "Query Features" (only works starting zoom level 14), which will show you all the places around you. When selecting the place, you will be presented with the information.

Yes it's a bit devious, but this is the only way I know that comes close to what your idea. After all, this might be interesting to see as an feature in the feature, but I think that depends on the OSM community.

Thank you Guys! I did not know that there are Query Features. Is it also possible to add photos?

That would be really nice, and very helpful as well.

That would be nice indeed, but as far as I know that is not possible. You can of course make a tag with a URL to a self created or public domain photo on the internet, but my advise would be to safe that for the wiki page and not to add photos to every location on the map.
