Railway signals

Posted by martinum4 on 15 May 2017 in English (English)

Hey everyone,

as I started working on an OpenGeoFictionRailwayMap, one though came to mind, we all map railways, but so far i haven't seen anyone develop a signal system for thier country. I started developing one in the wiki for L&A but I'm not an in-depth person regarding railways.

So my question: Anyone has a working railway signal system for their country?

Edit: To clarify, it's not overwikification IMHO because I will actually use my signalling system to render it on a map

Railway-signaling for me is only a technical question in the background. More important for map and wiki I think are service-details of railways (hi-speed, train-category, line-numbers, freight-tracks and so on).

But I welcome everybody, who will map and describe his rail-system in OGF.

I also prepared some kind of a signalling system. Didn't get far yet. Still having trouble with a specific piece of the concept.

Have you done anything about the rendering yet? Can I see something yet? If not, did you already decide, which tag to use?

@histor: more important than filling out wiki pages of lists is IMHO actually using the OpenRailwayMap-Tagging scheme, that way stuff is consistent and easily renderable...

@toadwart: it will be based on the OpenRailwayMap codebase, you'll see there in the tagging tutorials how to tag signals and other things. I'll probably leave in the real-world-signals if someone wants to use them (really lazy), that way you could use the JOSM-Presets for tagging if you want to and have rendered results. I didn't set up any server yet because i want to at least partially have a finished fictive signalling system...

Kind regards

Martin

I just started an article, just to show how far I got and to see oif that is what you had in mind. I will fill it within the next hours.

Damn, these look just marvellous, but I'd still improve at least one thing, never allow trains to drive into an occupied block so easy as you do in the "Proceed into Occupied Section"... It's okay for special occasions like adding an engine for reversing the direction, I'd use some special signal for that and not some ordinary one, maybe have one red lamp in it or something to make the danger more obvious signal-vise Ill blatantly steal those dark grey lamps for my future signals btw :P But yes, this is what i had in mind and what will be rendered in the OGFRM

It is always the question, what you will see on the map.

Look at openrailwaymap.org, they have different layers, just browse around, i tagged some signals in Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. I want the End-product of an OGFRM kinda similar to what ORM is to OSM...

Here's the article for Calliesanyo's signals. I've only made the mainline signals for now, shunting signals and signs will come later.

Also I have tagged the line between Sediimarkt Central Station (Eki Zeiban) and Basha Iilitarafa to the south map link with what I think is correct ORM tagging for the mainline signals and train protection systems.

I will map a land 4 times greater as Germany. It is clear, that railway-signaling details can not be one of the most important activities. So everybody has its own playground. :-)

@histor I'm lazy sometimes too, that's why i started to develop some in-cab-signalling, way less signals to map ;)

@Reece202: I think the railway:signal:main=KAO-04:feinhanamrebenska-kiishei and railway:signal:route_distant=KAO:kiishei_wuha should be prefixed with country short code, like in real live it's "DE-ESO:*", someone has started a country code page on the wiki, look there for yours (or change it if you don't like it)

@martinum4 It technically is prefixed with the country code, just the 3 character OGFSCC code instead of the 2 character one (CY) on the other country code page. I reused the country code to also signify the nationalised system after I did the map edits.

I can change the tags to be "CY-KAO: ... " If that works better for the renderer.

Oh, i though "KAO" would be the short form for the law/regulation regarding the signals and not for your country :) Usually the code is like countrycode-signalregulations:signaltypeshortcode as far as i can tell, i didn't imagine your regulation just being 04 :D nah, 3 characters are fine i guess, i'll solve that problem if there is any when come to it...
