Holy crap. I was working on my town, and I noticed that part of my town a good way away from the lake was water-colored. I thought it was just a bug, so I went to view mode…
…and everything was flooded.
Not just on my peninsula, but on the main continent, on the other continent… basically EVERYWHERE. Does anyone know why this happened?

These types of “floods” usually occur because of a rendering error that occurs when the coastline is messed up in some way (not part of one Way, coastline is going the wrong way (clockwise instead of ccw), coastline is broken in one section, etc.). For example: I tried to add nodes to my coastline and I had to split the coastline into three sections - the whole island is flooded after the next coastline refresh.

Yesterday I flooded my country (Cariocas) accidentally too. After export from JOSM to the site. When I look, all my streets are on the water…. but today, everything was allright again. May be, was a bug in my case.
I like to edit my coastline, but I prefer to create lakes and lagoons, than create islands or some big edits on coast…

to wonder if there shouldnt be a requirement to notify an admin if you are going to modify your coastline area. Its flooded again. people you need to be very careful when modifying coastlines areas to make sure that the way direction of the coastline wraps around your land in a counterclockwise direction and that there are no gaps created when you modify your coastline.

The coastline is a special tag. This tag is indeed to handle careful. The renderer “thinks”, that at the right side of the coastline has to be the sea and at the left side is land. Now, where is right and left? In the direction of the way, the coastline is drawn. So the direction of the way at the coastline-tag is important.
Therefore it is logical, to draw the coastline of an island counterclockwise. If the line in this direction is closed in itself (like a circle or an egg or a pancake), so in the middle is the land and outside the sea. If you had drawn the island in the wrong direction, in Podlatch2 you can change it (in other editors too, I think).
The coastline must have no gap. So if you draw a new coastline, “mind the gap”. The coastline shall not cross itself (yes, I have seen this in OGF). Simplest method for changing the coastline is to set a lot of new nodes on the line and then move this nodes to the coastline, you imagine. For harbours, marinas and piers remember - there is the tag “man_made = pier”, that saves for you many new nodes for a changing coastline
If a piece of the coastline of a continent has more than 2000 nodes, this way is to split. To do so is no problem - take a node and split the coastline with the scissor-tool.
Update of the coastline is all 4 hours. So you must sometimes wait a while, to see your changings.
If the land is flooded, the administratores will look, why - and repair. If you think, it is your edit, that had flooden the land, write in the inbox of an administator. So it can be easyer, to localisize the mistake in the coastline.

It would be great if there was some way for the OGF server to identify and reject any changeset that would turn large areas of land into water. It seems like this problem occurs often enough, and disorients enough people, that it might be worth setting up a quick test to spot it and prevent it at the time of upload, if such a thing is feasible. (?)

And it would be great, that not nearly every day at european midnight the land is sunken in the water. Indeed a tool, that documents all coastline-changings (where and who) can be helpful.

I may or may not be responsible for the latest “midnight flooding” :S
