An actual year of mapping

Posted by whateversusan on 25 June 2019 in English (English)

I've been on this site mapping for a whole year, now, and I think the best thing I've created may be this suburb that reminds me of all the terrible places I'm from. I tried to layer different neighborhood street styles from industrial village to streetcar suburb to winding car-centric maze.

I feel like I've learned a lot, and that hopefully my mapping has improved over time. Here's to the next year.

Location: -40.756, 160.172

And everyone may safely ignore the green state to the east of the greatly mapped state.

So nice, but I think that you should add landuse=residential

This looks like the sort of area where I happily enter from the highway to find myself entangled in an urban maze of monstrous proportions and, my blood pressure rising by the minute, finally surrender en decide to use my navigation....

Or in short: well done, this.

I am in doubt myself about the 'landuse=residential' thing. I did it myself in AR120-17 (southern neighbour) but it has pro's and con's IMHO. Urban areas look better because of improved contrast, but for me it is harder to make a good transition urban-rural just because of this.

And we will not discuss the naming of some shops and like: 'irritating men on bikes' ?!?' I was planning to have a chain of coffee and cake shops devoted to you, but I believe I will change to gin shacks ;-)

godspeed,

Marcello

My earlier maps made extensive use of the residential tag, but I realized after a while I was just using it as a way to denote an urban area and as a higher-contrast background. I've seen both styles on OSM, and I think for now I prefer not using the tag.

Name those gin shacks! We need more gin shacks.

I'd recommend using the Angle Snap feature on Josm for your buildings and streets when needed. The size of your shops can be a bit too large at times, particularly in Darran Center (Speaking of, I'd definitely visit Evil Ol' Tom's Ex-Communist crap :-) ). Other than that, I think your state's coming along great!
