Nominatim

Posted by ADB52 on 7 January 2019 in English (English)

The search function (Nominatim) has broken, any search returns the result:

Error contacting nominatim.openstreetmap.org: execution expired

This on top of the direction finder being out of action for over a year. And the territory requests taking a little while longer than usual.

Maybe the idea to put a temporary stop on territory requests until everything is sorted out is the way to get on top of all of these issues.

Nominatim and search functionality have been discussed MANY TIMES before. I don't want to take the time to search out and provide links, but my experience suggests google is helpful (https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Aopengeofiction.net+nominatim)

TLDR:

Search functionality and nominatim were never part of the original configuration of OGF. The only reason it was working (briefly) is because an outside user (martinum4) took the time, money and effort to set up his own, SEPARATE nominatim server. When he disappeared, that was the end of nominatim and search.

If people want that functionality, someone is going to have to step up and take martinum4's place. It is beyond the expertise, not to mention time and space constraints, of the current OGF set-up. Any volunteers?

That said - we survived before this functionality was provided. We are surviving now. How does this impact anything at all, except it would "nice to have"?

I had noticed that the nominatim website is no longer accessible. I assume this might relate to Isleño being missing? Which, if so, will require him to come back, which is not something we can easily expect.

We should just remove Nominatim altogether: unless someone else wants to do it, we should not have a feature which is merely tempting, only for us to be disappointed when we find out it doesn't work.

The search box has always been there. It's built into the OSM software stack that is being used for OGF. I suppose it could be removed but that's a divergence from the OSM standard that might (pure speculation) make updates more complicated. Anyway it's up to Thilo, and he seems to prefer keeping customization to a minimum.

Huh. I thought that the search box was added only a couple years ago. Maybe I am mixing it up with the direction finder.

@luziyca the direction finder is a relatively new thing.

None of the issues I raised are urgent. But I'm under the impression that maybe not all is well at the top :-)

The search box was always there, but because I never intended to install Nominatim, I built a workaround solution based on the Overpass API. I'm going to enable that one again. Until the, you can use a similar search mechanism here:

https://tile.opengeofiction.net/util/search.html

Note that the search is strictly limited to the displayed map area. Slower than Nominatim, especially when the search area is large.

The direction finder, unfortunately, cannot as easily be replaced, so I'm going to remove it for now.

Let me also add that the Nominatim/Routing outage doesn't have anything to do with Isleño's recent inactivity. Those services were provided by user "martinum4" who has indeed been missing for a while.

I did try to read about updating the nominatim. I'm not sure why he quitted: is it because the update process takes too long or the update.php being too complicated or the server is just not running up to that? I could help only if I know why he quitted because I couldn't see the issue just from the docs.
