They seem to be used for making bricks, the chimneys are needed for burning the bricks to harden them. See: www.aljazeera.com/indepth/inpictures/2014/05/pictures-brick-fields-banglade-2014517134431553324.html Seems to be a big industry down there actually.

Thanks you 2, looks interesting. didn’t expect brick-making to be such a big industry. Maybe something Tierajas-Verdes could specialize for imports :P

If you download the osm data for the area, you find the following tags:

building=industrial kiln:type=Hoffmann man_made=kiln product=brick

I was thinking brick kilns even before that, but the data seems to confirm it. One of those surprising instances where OSM clearly has much better data than googlemaps.
