I notice that in some places like Roantra and Khaiwoon, if you turn on TopoMap, the topography is shown in the typical “3D-ish” way a genuine topography map would be. How exactly do you do this? I’m finding it a little awkward to make larger mountain ranges out of “forest” (even thought it’s probably a lot easier to do it this way anyways…).

On OSM this is done with an external elevation data set (from NASA IIRC). My guess is that the owners of these territories created similar data. I wouldn’t know where to start, but presumably if you draw numbered contour lines they can be converted.
“Mapping for the renderer” is a big no-no in OSM. In OGF it might be more acceptable, but one problem is if the rendering rules change and your mountains end up looking like valleys or something.
The easiest way to represent topography is probably with a large number of rivers and streams. Obviously you can’t see how steep the hills are, but it can still give a reasonable idea of what’s higher and lower.

The 3D-terrain has also been discussed here:

Yes, I know that I offered to make the program available and haven’t followed through yet. Shame on me! I promise, I will release it, but I need to do some restructuring beforehand, so this will take some time.
