Tectonic Plates

Posted by Black Baron on 31 January 2017 in English.

Hello mappers! I have been working on a possible map of tectonic plates in OGF. I would like to know your opinion about it. There are many possibilities for the location of the tectonic plates and the direction of the displacement of these influences the existence of rifts and mountains, as is the case of the central mountain range in Uletha and the high mountains of the north of Castilea Archantea, in the Center of Archanta Major. Espero que os guste. Poco a poco iremos perfeccionando el maravilloso mundo de OGF. Happy mapping!

It would be great, when people decide to work on things like this, if they took the time to see what discussion had already taken place, prior.

Google is your friend:

This turns up, at the least,

Sorry but I’ve searched on the net for the last days and didn’t found on Google these pages… . Consider the previous image only a modest contribution… . For the next time I’ll question about interests and previous works… . Anyway, I think it is important to recover topics in the user diaries, since many times the conversations are lost in infinity …. Happy mapping!

Great work, Black Baron! I suggest you get in touch with people who are also interested in developing more on this topic to talk about possibilities! I, for one, would love to know if there could be large earthquakes in my country! :)

Nice work! But I thought maybe a crack through West Commonia to Commonia and then continue along its border before going on to the crack near the pelansian plate. Also can you go on with the directions of the plates, how they move etc???

Great map, although maybe the western edge of the antarephian plate should be either further out to sea or more inland to follow the mountains

Thank you for your comments. I’ve read all the previous works and it seems that we all created a very similar structures so possibly se can convert all the information into a consistent model. Obviously its a hard work and everyone has its own idea related to their territories, specially with respect to mountain ranges and rifts. However, it could be a good starting point in order to gain verosimilitude / create reallistic global or international features. Step by step the OGF world increases the climate structure and I think that is important to improve this organization in other aspects such as geological aspects. Impossible mission? You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one… :-P

That’s really good map. I made an earthquake map for Orinoco a few years ago. I like to think that Orinoco sits on a subduction zone similar to Cascadia in the Pacific Northwest. Orinoco Earthquake Map

For anyone who hasn’t read it, the key comment from Luciano’s first link comes from user TRJ, an actual student of geology:

We have a long and complicated history at OGF of trying to figure out a system of coherent plate tectonics for our world…

… If you have a blanco map of the OGF world, with just the landmasses, there will be numerous ways in which you could fill in the plate boundries and their movements. The problem is that there are already a lot of countries with existing geology/geography, (natural) borders, climate and from these three factors emerging cultures and economies in place…

… I’m sure I or other members of the OGF-community could help you improve it. We could create several geologically sound plate tectonic systems on a blanco map. But I think it is nearly impossible to create one for a map that is already partially filled in with countries, where the creators only thought about geology on a national scale.

There are a lot of geological features that makes sense on a national or regional scale, but contradict each other on a continental or even intercontinental scale. To make a correct geological map of the entire OGF world, you would need concensus about mountain ranges, rift valleys, earth quake zones, climate etc etc etc. Inevitably people would have to change existing mapped areas, wiki entries and review the plans they had for their countries. I fear it would be extremely difficult to get everybody on board.

Creating a plate tectonic system for OGF is a noble, but (almost) impossible cause.

Happy mapping,

TRJ (geology student)

Accordingly it’s impossible to achieve a reallistic approximation to woods distribution, international mountain ranges and rivers, tidal effects, even global climate. My objective wasn’t ever to impose, but to open a nice conversation :-P Maybe actually it’s impossible to create a tectonic plates map, but in 5-10 years…. . WOW, we’re the people who are mapping a whole fictionous Earth-like world! Another almost impossible cause. :-) I’m very happy of being a member of this worldwide group. I’ll continue working with other aspects of the OGF World, like the List of International Wetlands… . The OGF World is a really wonderful place to explore. I’ll forget the tectonic themes…

So far, in fact there is no official map of tectonic plates. I wish this debate will close soon, so that at least people know where to map in their countries.
