I just installed the Areaselector plugin for JOSM and I have no idea how to open it. I followed the instructions to install it and a message popped up and said it was successful. Are the plugins in plain view or do you need to open them from another menu?

I have that plugin in JOSM, it appears under the “More Tools” menu. Having said that, I have no idea how to use it, and there doesn’t seem to be much documentation online. I guess it’s used for capturing shapes from image-files that you’re tracing from. In OGF context, I could see using it to work from scans of paper maps or non-OSM image files of previously drawn geofictions. Is that what you’re trying to do?
I just upload image files as a separate layer and “trace” them with ways manually. But my offline maps I’ve tried so far aren’t very sophisticated - just sketches.

I wanted to use it to measure the area of the country and it’s counties for the Wiki page. I’ve been using Potlatch this whole time so the whole JOSM interface is new to me.

There is a plugin called “measurement” that I have used. The limitation is that it will provide calculated areas only for closed polygons - it can’t do relations. So what I do is I select all the ways that make up my relation for a given area, I “combine” the ways, look at the area in the measurement tool, then “Undo”.
It’s a little bit cumbersome but works fine. The other option that I have been working toward is to make sure my relations don’t include water areas and then you can use the output Thilo periodically runs (http://opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Area_table) to get areas of well-labelled relations.
