Suggestions to improve Xenica?

Posted by FictiveJ on 14 December 2018 in English.

Well, now my small tropical nation of Xenica has existed on the map for over a year… However, during this time, I feel as if there have been no cohesive ideas for how it will work out.

The plan of Xenica has changed shape a few times. Originally, it was a Singapore-esque city state, full of skyscrapers and modern architecture. I have had to tone down that vision, and now Xenica is more similar to a small Caribbean/Indian Ocean nation, with some urban influence, but much less than before.

Unfortunately, this ‘hopping’ has led to a place, which, at least in my view, doesn’t quite make sense. One user (I think it was Isleño?) referred to the place as looking more like a lot of towns or cities put in one, rather than a unified mass. If you look on the map, there are very awkwardly shaped streets and housing estates, the areas of vegetation and rainforest look like they were put there as an afterthought (I had to strip away motorways and whatnot since ‘nature always comes first’), and using Potlatch 2 probably doesn’t help much in this case.

So, looking at the CBD and into surrounding areas, what would you suggest I should do with Xenica? I certainly believe my territory has much potential.

The current map reminds me much of how I had mapped Singkangia; it was not really reunified as well on the map.

The suggestion I can give is: Look at your national road network. (By the way if TCC sees the map and its random classifications… never mind) Settlements are actually built along major roads, and later over time roads branches out to smaller ones. Once I have my computer, I will show you a proposed network and show you what towns can be moved/deleted/kept etc.

Otherwise, I suggest also working on the coastlines as well. Make beautiful beaches to illustrate a tropical nation.

You can also look at Malaysia for inspiration.

(P.S. What plans do you have for Trinipale? Gut is the capital of Gutregia for your info)

What or who is TCC? And yes, thank you for your suggestions. Perhaps the coasts should also come as a priority.

As for Trinipale, I will message you on the matter.

Also, what does it mean about ‘random classifications’? Are you talking about the highway shields?

Each major road is assigned a three-digit number. In the future, these will be effectively planned out, and the number will be based on geographical location (e.g. roads in the north will start with a ‘1’ or ‘2’, in the south ‘7’, ‘8’ or ‘9’.)

Classifications as in primary, secondary, tertiary, minor/unclassified, residential and service.

What is wrong with the classifications? I have downgraded most of the roads to ‘residential’ type, since tertiary was too high.

My personal issue with the classifications are that primary roads turn into secondary roads without their being an intersection separating it. Like here, here, or here. I also think that you go a little overboard with roads changing classification in general, although it’s definitely a thing in real cities. Still, Lister Avenue would make sense to be a continuation of Alexandra Road instead and be a secondary road; especially since Alexandra Road doesn’t go through Alexandra.

The issue which I am seeing here is how the roads, bodies of water, rivers, rail, and forests are sharp-cornered. This is a problem because, well, you can’t drive on that, trains won’t operate properly, and forests aren’t like that. Also, I don’t think so rivers can not end and start without a body of water… I don’t think so I have seen any college grounds which is just a square.

Sorry for the criticism…
