Tales of a Nooby Mapper

Posted by Fluffr_Nuttr on 21 June 2017 in English.

Hi again! So I have something actually started a beach city in the northern peninsula of Fyler Island, in Western Commonia. Got the coast down, made a nice sandy area. But how do you intersect two roads? I’m fairly sure you place a node where you want the intersection and plop in the presets. But whenever I try to put a single node on an already existing way the node acts as connected with the way, and the node will disappear when I press escape. How do I place the node to have it independently of the way? Do I even have to do that? If not, how do I do it?

Anyway, even though I may be a big noob at this software, I am not a noob at the geofiction hobby itself. I have had a fascination with geography as far back as I can remember. I started drawing my own fictional maps around the age of 7. Gradually they became more and more intricate. One day I was watching a youtube video by some really small vlogger talking about his fictional country. In the comments someone linked to opengeofiction.net, and I checked it out and signed up.

In the future, I plan to claim a small cold country in the south, most likely settled by Scandmark or some other power. It is a rich fuse between the culture of the colonizers and the natives. The name could be Aeutia or Navanuq. There will be a few cities with a population of 200,000 or so, but most of the nation would be tiny villages. It will be an analogue to Iceland, Greenland and Northern Canada.

Any advice with my voyage in mapping? Say so in the comments.

If you use ID editor then you should double-click to place a node.

You mean this video? It was me commenting on it :))

About your question, I am not really sure if I understand it right. By what you say I presume you’re using the software JOSM. If you want to have a street intersecting another one, you don’t have to start drawing it from the intersection and there is, as far as I know, also no way of drawing them automatically. You have to start drawing the street from where it begins (it could be a street or simply just an empty space), then you draw the way by clicking on the map. If you want to have an intersection, you have to make the way cross the street, but don’t forget to also add a node in the intersection.

There are many JOSM tutorials on YouTube. Even if you use the online ID editor these could be helpful as editing basics are nearly the same on both.

Wangi, thanks a million for this tip! My only problem is that is can download ‘my’area, edit what I want, but my upload back to the OGF server fails. Any idea what could cause this ?

Download from the webpage, load it into JOSM and edit? If so sounds like you’ve not configured the server settings in JOSM; see: http://wiki.opengeofiction.net/wiki/index.php/OGF:Frequently_asked_questions#How_can_I_use_JOSM_for_editing_the_OpenGeofiction_map.3F

I put the URL in ‘Preferences / Connections’ as http://opengeofiction.net/api. It gives a correct validation. Then I can log in as with any other editot (P2, ID), download a map area and work on it. It’s the return part that fails. Is there is different parameter for uploading it back to the OFG server or anything else that I miss ?

Welcome to Open Geofiction, JOSM is definitely the best mapping software for the job! Looking forward to seeing what your country will look like.
