Stanton- a project description

Posted by Fluffr_Nuttr on 19 September 2021 in English (English). Last updated on 23 September 2021.

Greetings!

After the biannual general FSA ballot, Trombonist2003, Cartograp herKing and I have been confirmed by admin as FSA coordinators, with me being focused on the affairs of the Eastern states.

I suspect quite a few of you have heard of a Stanton “partial redo” from Yoyo21’s previous diary on the matter, however today I bring you a more fleshed out plan. Instead of being divided into boroughs, Stanton is a consolidated city-county made up of 11 wards, each with several hundred thousand people and subdivided into many neighborhoods. They are not meant to be claimed individually- anyone can map throughout the city as long as they have permission. But the themes of the wards can give mappers an idea of where to create what they wish. This also gives Stanton a slightly different identity than our NYC.

And with that, here’s the plan.Credit to infrarrojo

(Disclaimer- the map and these descriptions are all Infrarrojo’s work. Good stuff though and I’m liberally borrowing from him.)

  • Stanton’s downtown is wealthy, though as more people work than live there, things get pretty quiet at night. Inspired heavily by Lower Manhattan, with some cues from Philadelphia.
  • Northern Stanton is somewhat of an industrial remnant, containing a large port facility and one of Stanton’s older airports.
  • South Carnaby (or SoCar) would be more of a hipster neighborhood, probably recently gentrified, while Brownstone has some gentrification and some old money.
  • Weybirton, St. Cassian, Goose Bay and Southside would have both working-class areas and projects, some attempts at developing villages within the city, and some middle-class areas.
  • West Warwick is the transition area between Stanton and Warwick, possibly reflecting Northern Queens and Nassau County.
  • The western wards will likely be more industrial and working-class, especially Astera, Perister, and Kenver. Hudson County, New Jersey could be a great source of inspiration.

It’s also expected that the identities of these wards change over time as people give life to them.

At the moment we’re largely focusing on natural features, city layout and general detail, but transit and motorway projects are on the horizon once we get some work done here.

PM me, Infrarrojo or Yoyo21 to get started.

Wiki password problems

Posted by Fluffr_Nuttr on 6 May 2019 in English (English).

Hi.

I’ve been having problems with the wiki password. I put in my username and password, and it says the password is incorrect. I then click ‘Forgot Password’, and I put in my username and email to get a temporary password. Then it says no email was ever registered with my account. The only option would be to create a new account, but I don’t think that was allowed on the website. I contacted admin about this 2 weeks ago, but I haven’t gotten any response. This has essentially blocked me from the forums since I returned to OGF a few months ago. I know Admin can be kind of slow sometimes. Should I just wait, or is there something else I can do?

Installing Josm

Posted by Fluffr_Nuttr on 2 March 2019 in English (English).

So, for whatever reason, when I try installing Josm, it doesn’t allow me to run the installer. It just asks me to open, save, or cancel. None of these work out. I’ve downloaded this before and had this exact same problem.

Plans for my country

Posted by Fluffr_Nuttr on 14 July 2017 in English (English).

Hello! So, in UL015 where I have been working I sort of have a conflict with culture. Mostly I’d like something slightly american influenced so I can feel at home, but i’d also like room for other cultures. I’ve been thinking about a history of Zionist-ish settlements in the area, but I’m not sure how to fit that in to a temperate climate in eastern Ulethea. Is it possible to combine both concepts into one? Also, I’m thinking about making the country collaborative. I think it would make things easier and way more fun. Though first I’ll slap a name on it. Would anybody be interested in a project like that?

Claiming Territory

Posted by Fluffr_Nuttr on 26 June 2017 in English (English).

RE-EDIT I’m trying to find out which territory to claim. I’m trying to get a desert country with a long coast to sustain some major cities and an inland desert. Ideally it would be a major muslim-analogue nation. Any advice? Also, are there any Islam or Judaism analouges I don’t know about in OGF?

Tales of a Nooby Mapper

Posted by Fluffr_Nuttr on 21 June 2017 in English (English).

Hi again! So I have something actually started a beach city in the northern peninsula of Fyler Island, in Western Commonia. Got the coast down, made a nice sandy area. But how do you intersect two roads? I’m fairly sure you place a node where you want the intersection and plop in the presets. But whenever I try to put a single node on an already existing way the node acts as connected with the way, and the node will disappear when I press escape. How do I place the node to have it independently of the way? Do I even have to do that? If not, how do I do it?

Anyway, even though I may be a big noob at this software, I am not a noob at the geofiction hobby itself. I have had a fascination with geography as far back as I can remember. I started drawing my own fictional maps around the age of 7. Gradually they became more and more intricate. One day I was watching a youtube video by some really small vlogger talking about his fictional country. In the comments someone linked to opengeofiction.net, and I checked it out and signed up.

In the future, I plan to claim a small cold country in the south, most likely settled by Scandmark or some other power. It is a rich fuse between the culture of the colonizers and the natives. The name could be Aeutia or Navanuq. There will be a few cities with a population of 200,000 or so, but most of the nation would be tiny villages. It will be an analogue to Iceland, Greenland and Northern Canada.

Any advice with my voyage in mapping? Say so in the comments.

Okay, this is weird

The harbor I have made seems to be glitchy on the map. See, it can be seen from afar, but when you close up on the harbor, it’s not there.

How do you guys edit coastlines?

Posted by Fluffr_Nuttr on 20 June 2017 in English (English).

Hi! New mapper here. I’ve loved making hand drawn fictional maps for a long time, but have never touched any software like this. I’m trying to put a nice coastal city in West Commonia, a bit south of Damon’s City. So I start drawing a nice looking harbor, and tagged it as coastline. The problem is that I don’t know how to integrate my harbor with the already existing coastline. How do you guys do it? EDIT: Note I have not uploaded this to the main map yet.
