San Juan Topo Layer

Posted by Huachachi on 21 July 2020 in English (English)

I made a topo layer for “San Juan de Castellán” in JOSM following all the steps in the Wiki of “how to make a topo layer” and as the page says I sent it to e-mail. All this was in day 13 of this month. Also the page says to give a week to see the layer in OGF or get an answer in e-mail. But I didn’t received nothing. Perhaps the admins check their emails less frequently than before, perhaps I need to inform the email here in Diary entry.

Thank you in advance...

thilo hasn't been active for months--probably since April or May. Nobody's topo layers have been updated since then, because he's the only one who can update them. I'm actually starting to worry about what the heck thilo is up to...I hope he is ok amongst COVID-19.

Given that it was featured in this month's contest... Shouldn't that have been checked earlier?

The entire contest is mostly pointless if the files cannot be processed in time. Especially during contest time I would have expected significantly shorter reaction times.

I think we should cancel the contest and start a new one. A contest needs some kind of feedback and comparison which we don't have in that case.

Well, it isn’t for this month contest but you are right

In response to some comments:

Yes, I am aware that the topo layer may not be updated regularly, but there are still other ways to show your contour mapping. Ever heard of screenshots? Drive sharing files? etc etc

My intention of launching a contour mapping challenge is to prepare ahead other types of mapping in future challenges, like countryside rural mountainside mapping, border fixing etc etc. Topology is important before mapping.

If you like to you can skip it and wait for the next one. I don't mind.

Showing my work in progress is rather pointless, isn't it? It is like a baking contest where I would proudly present the ingredients, but can't show the cake, because the oven is out of order.

If you want to encourage new people to use that kind of mapping, they (including me) need feedback. And the most important feedback is to see your files working. I am not spending hours without knowing whether it is going in the right direction or not. That's like cooking a meal without tasting every now and then.

Once the thing got kickstarted and I know what I am doing, I am fine with a longer feedback time. But for now I am waiting for the first iteration of the island I topologically mapped. I don't like to continue without seeing whether that went as expected or I have to change something.

You "don't mind" if I do the contest? You don't mind that someone who actually tried to do so leaves it out of disappointment? Really?

I don't get how this comment was necessary. Updating the topo layer takes time, admins are volunteers with own, sometimes quite busy lives outside OGF. The mapping challenge is a very positive initiative, it's not just about rendering contour lines, as this happens separately to all the other mapping, it's rather about defining the topographic base of the territory for yourself, for your further mapping, where it really doesn't matter at all if contour lines are rendered or not.

There are manifold issues arising here, and I am trying to differentiate, but I must admit sometimes either I fail to find the rights words or the reader reads something into it which I did not mean to say.

So let's try to clarify things:

Contest -> Good. Absolutely good to involve the community to practise on mapping skills, to revisit their mapping mistakes and looking to improve and also good to have an incentive, as every participant focuses on the same topic.

And also honorable to take the effort to organise these things and also for standing in the first line against all the different opinions and criticisms which will inevitably come up.

On the other hand, I was disappointed that there was no recap of the previous bus-related contest. (I didn't check the old diary thread, maybe there is something. I was waiting for a new thread for the results) For that contest I chose not to take part because it was out of my focus, but I would have been very keen to see what had been done by others. Also as an incentive to take part next time when the focus fits me better.

So this time I took part, despite my reservations I had at first. And I was disappointed that I could not get as quick results as I am used from mapping. Usually the next day the renderer got it for normal mapping. But this time no results on the map even after a week. Which, as I said, is discouraging for getting things started. Not only for me, but also for many others I guess.

Therefore I thaught it was a reasonable idea to temporarily stop this contest and use a more manageable one for the meantime, until we find a time which fits admins better.

Or you could relabel it in a way that these contest related expectations are somehow relaxed. But a contest should have some kind of comparing things which could not easily delivered here in the usual way.

You may have a different opinion on the relevance and priority or order of contests. That's fine.

But what really upset me was to get an answer like: "I don't mind if you like it or not." That is just disrespectful. That made the comment necessary.

Sorry, I said that cos Im a bit frustrated with what I perceive to be a lack of enthusiasm, that people just ignore my posts and stuff.

Like I said, these are mere challenges, not a contest, and they arent strictly obligatory. Still i see that you wish for a need for exchanges and feedback.

The topo challenge will go on indefinitely. I will post a temporal smaller challenge you can work on for the time being.
